Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon figure. Netflix is creating a new series called "Sonic Prime."

He can really move and he’s got an attitude! A new 3D animated Sonic the Hedgehog series is in development for Netflix, Variety reports. The show will be called Sonic Prime, and it’ll consist of 24 episodes. Sega of America and WildBrain are behind the impending family-friendly outing.

Now, Sonic Prime will showcase our titular hedgehog hero grappling with the mysteries of a new multiverse. Its fate rests on his shoulders. Additionally, the series will tell the tale of a “journey of self-discovery and redemption” for Sonic.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog game was released via Sega Genesis in 1991. It spawned a flurry of animated shows including 1993’s Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, which ran for 65 episodes. Jaleel White lent his voice for the lead. Cartoon Network’s Sonic Boom marked the franchise’s latest series. It wrapped in 2017. Sonic the Hedgehog hit the big screen in February 2020 with Ben Schwartz as our favorite speedy blue mammal and Jim Carrey as Sonic’s archnemesis, Dr. Robotnik. A sequel is currently in the works.

Dominique Bazay, Netflix’s director of original animation, had this to say regarding Sonic Prime:

Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own. I spent many hours with the Blue Blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.

According to Variety, the animated tale will be geared toward children ages six to 11 years old. But it also plans to cater to “legacy Sonic fans of all ages.” There’s no word yet on the writing team, voice talent or a recording schedule.

I grew up watching Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid. In fact, the theme song hasn’t left my head in 25 years. Not only that but Sonic the Hedgehog was my first foray into video games. I religiously played the 1991 game on my Sega Genesis. The more Sonic, the merrier.

Sonic Prime is slated to premiere in 2022 on Netflix.
