All Aboard — Again!

The path to New Eden never did run smooth. Optioned in 2015 as a television take on the 2013 film, Snowpiercer spent several years in preproduction limbo/hell before premiering on TNT in 2020.

The story of survivors of a global apocalypse aboard a ten-mile-long luxury train perpetually circumnavigating the frozen Earth enraptured viewers experiencing their own extreme isolation during the first summer of the pandemic. The first season’s whodunit nature segued elegantly into examining class and power dynamics. Anchored by amazing actors and mesmerizing cinematography, this turned into a ride no one wanted off of.

Through the first three seasons, the original hierarchy of the train fell to a collaboration between Tailie Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) and Head of Hospitality/Secret Chief Engineer Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) only to be reshaped by the unexpected intrusion of Big Alice, a second ark of humanity, helmed by none other Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean), whom Melanie thought abandoned and dead, and carrying Melanie’s long-believed-lost daughter, Alex (Rowan Blanchard).

Snowpiercer defied expectations and surmounted the challenges of a ship-in-a-bottle scenario. Audiences identified with the characters’ dilemmas and expected to be shocked and awed by every improbable plot twist.

But then, in a sudden fire sale of IPs, TNT axed Snowpiercer in January 2023, despite the third season’s cliffhanger ending and the entirety of the fourth ready to go.

AMC swooped in for the rescue in March this year, with initial rumors swirling that it would rerelease the first three seasons over the remainder of 2024 and drop Season 4 in early 2025.

But this train moves fast once on the go, and the Season 4 premiere is right around the corner. “We can’t wait to share the final season of this thrill ride of a series with this vibrant fan community and new viewers starting July 21 on AMC and AMC+, with plenty of time built in to catch up on previous seasons on a variety of on-demand platforms and AMC+ before then,” said Courtney Thomasma, Executive Vice President of Streaming for AMC Networks.

We can expect the return of all the aforementioned cast — yes, even the Eternal Engineer himself — as well as series regulars Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Iddo Goldberg,  Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Sam Otto, Chelsea Harris, Mike O’Malley, Roberto Urbina and Sheila Vand.

Hopefully, there will also be some Icy Boki (Aleks Paunovic) and Dr. Pelton (Karin Konoval) time on the ticket. Newcomers previously announced are Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Clark Gregg and The Americans‘s Michael Aronov.

Will This Be the Real End of the Line?

What happens after this? Could AMC revive the series or spin off the story of New Eden’s founders? If they dare to lay a new track, there’s a world of narrative potential out there.

In an interview after that amazing Season 1 finale, showrunner-at-the-time Graeme Manson discussed the possibilities for Snowpiercer‘s future. Throwing back to the O.G. source material, a series of French graphic novels, Le Transperceneige, he recognized the depth of story and characters that could be plumbed.

“The graphic novels take us through tremendously philosophical and absurdist trips, but they introduce these amazing concepts of multiple trains, which I think is just terrific for the storytelling on Snowpiercer. I like that Snowpiercer could someday discover the underground bunker with the people who wear the mice helmets. I don’t know that that’s going to be this Snowpiercer, but it could be a Snowpiercer. You know what I mean?”

Snowpiercer Season 4 premieres July 21, 2024, on AMC and AMC+, with the first three seasons available to stream on AMC+ throughout June.
