Episode titles are important. They provide context as well as lend a tone or theme to the general arc of a series. With Snowpiercer Season 4 Episode 8, “By Weeping Cross,” you may, like me, wonder what it refers to and how it ties into the third-to-last chapter of this narrative.

Wonder no more. According to Wiktionary, the phrase “to come home by weeping cross meansto return in disappointment, or in a spirit of contrition.” Not exactly the homecoming anyone was hoping for. With Wilford’s (Sean Bean) suicide by spliff after doing away with the unprepared Milius (Clark Gregg) and Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) temporarily out of commission, we’ve learned that Dr. Nima Rousseau (Michael Aronov) is the true villain of the New Eden era.

Nima stands with a look of disbelief as he looks to the right of the shot. He wears glasses and a cowl-collared brown cardigan over a brown vest and light blue collared shirt buttoned to the top. Snowpiercer Season 4 Episode 8 "By Weeping Cross"

Snowpiercer, “By Weeping Cross”

Survivors carry trauma from both the conflict and the survival itself. Expect a deeply emotional reunion between Till (Mickey Sumner) and Audrey (Lena Hall). Both have been through hell to get back to each other, but is being together enough to heal?

Meanwhile, Layton (Daveed Diggs), Josie (Katie McGuinness) and Liana are in danger of freezing to death. Well, Layton is in danger of freezing, anyway. (In cautious hindsight, the Drs. Headwood’s experimental treatments in icy physiology have been pretty amazing.) Help comes from an unexpected (and largely unexplained) quarter.

Layton crouches behind a makeshift metal shield with a baton gripped in his right hand. He wears a winter coat with a fur-lined hood. Snowpiercer Season 4 Episode 8 "By Weeping Cross"

A Question of the Science

Left on her own in all of this is Alex (Rowan Blanchard). Not knowing what’s happened to Melanie, she relies on her brain to outthink Nima and his goons. All that time with Wilford has aptly prepared her to deal with delusional megalomaniacs.

And what about Roche? His disappearance is swathed in mystery and enigma. Will the truth ever come out? Can he step back into his role in New Eden, or has he been forever changed?

Erroneous science plunged the world into an ice age nearly a decade ago. Can Nima’s Gemini compound reverse that? Is it enough to assuage his conscience (and ego)? Will New Eden be the first seed of the future or the last dream of humanity?
