Necessity may be the mother of invention, but desperation drives the humanity out of decision-making in Snowpiercer Season 4 Episode 3, “Life Source.” With Layton (Daveed Diggs) half-crazy in the wake of Zarah’s (Sheila Vand) death and Liana’s abduction, he’s looking for miracles in New Eden. Meanwhile, Bess (Mickey Sumner) and Ben (Iddo Goldberg) must contend with Milius’s (Clark Gregg) military regime aboard Snowpiercer.

We first met Layton as the World’s Last Detective, pulled out of the Tail in Snowpiercer Season 1 to solve the murders uptrain. Since then, he’s led a (couple of) revolution(s) and stolen a (couple of) train(s). Those detecting skills kick back in with a vengeance as he pieces together the plot that has stolen his daughter from him.
Snowpiercer‘s “Life Source”
Layton faces several problems. First, Liana’s kidnappers have a headstart. They don’t have a train but they probably have some sort of transportation that’ll move them and the baby faster than on foot. Second, based on Audrey’s (Lena Hall) intel, the kidnappers are working with the forces that have taken over Snowpiercer.
There’s no way Layton can catch Snowpiercer on a track scaler in time so he’s going to need Big Alice. But Big Alice is more than a supply train now. She’s the primary source of power for all of New Eden. And New Eden is run by a council. Can Layton convince them his daughter’s life is more important than the settlement? Prepare yourself for a version of Layton we’ve never seen before, not even in a fever dream.
He’s Definitely Not Coulson
With Mel (Jennifer Connelly) working with the scientists on saving the world (again) off-train, Admiral Milius has taken control of the train and its passengers. For those marking time, it’s been nine months of the Pax Milius. Who wants to hazard a guess about how it’s been going?

Ben and Bess are central to any resistance effort but Milius’s forces have their knees firmly on the neck of the citizenry. B&B have their thinking caps on as well since Milius is less than forthcoming about what his mission goal(s) is/are. And with no idea whether Audrey’s survived her journey to New Eden, Bess is running at angry-cynical-deathwish speed. So expect Ben to fight a battle on two fronts where he keeps Bess from rushing headlong over the edge while managing the harsh reality of Milius and his “peacekeepers.” Oh, and he needs to keep the train running for Mel. So I guess he’s battling on three fronts. Damn.
The fourth and final season of Snowpiercer airs on AMC and AMC+ on Sundays at 9 pm/8c.
