ABC’s hit Marvel series, Agents of SHIELD, has had a spotty record, giving us hit or miss episodes since it’s very beginning. The beauty of this show is that when it hits, it hits really hard. The TAHITI episode in season one where we discover the Kree alien and the Winter Soldier episode where HYDRA was revealed, immediately come to mind.
Where the show has absolutely always excelled is in it’s Winter and Season Finales, which always wrap up the story told so far with as much action and character as possible. The stakes are always high because, for all the show’s faults, they do a wonderful job building multi-episode drama and story arcs that always pay off. And really, at the end of the day, they aren’t afraid to “go there.” We’ve seen Skye Daisy get her Quake powers along with the death of Agent Tripplett in last season’s Winter Finale, we’ve seen Grant Ward kill Agent Koenig, and Skye and her father teaming up to take down her Inhuman monster of a mother.
It’s a slow burn that leaves us in the doldrums sometimes with a stretch of lackluster, unevenly-paced episodes, but in the end, the pay-off episodes are amazing. And, that being said, the show finally feels as if it’s learning from its mistakes and really starting to pay off the dramatic builds a lot sooner, realizing that with more dramatic twists and explosions, there’s more dramatic fall out to handle — which leads to more dramatic twists and explosions.
It’s really become a very fun show to watch, even if it did take a couple seasons of character investment and trust.
And all that being said, next week sees the Winter Finale for Season Three. We’ve got SHIELD Director Phil Coulson unconscious on the death planet, Maveth, along with HYDRA agent Ward and a captive Leo Fitz, who’s only there as a guarantee to keep his life long love Jemma Simmons safe and alive. The only way to save any of the people on the other planet is for Daisy Johnson and her team of two Inhumans, the metal-melting Joey Gutierrez and the electricity-hurling Lincoln Campbell, along with Agents Melinda May, Bobbi Morse and Lance Hunter, to infiltrate a heavily-fortified HYDRA castle.
The odds are forever against them, as we see in this clip of the strike team discovering that everything’s just blown up in their face and their plan is rubbish.
Everyone in the cast has made mention that this Winter Finale is also a really big one. Luke Mitchell, who plays Lincoln Campbell, said in an interview with CBR:
It is completely a game-changer. It’s going to send shockwaves through everyone, through the characters and the audience. People are going to need the break to discuss and deal with what happens in the winter finale before we come back.
We can imagine that whatever happens, it will deal with the Inhumans having an even larger presence in the show. Also, with this being their Winter Finale, chances are good that one of them will die. And, it’s very likely that they will fail in their mission and the Inhuman threat HYDRA is trying to bring back to earth will actually come through the portal. And something will happen to screw with Fitz-Simmons. It just has to.
The only thing we know for certain is that we’ll have to wait until March to see how they handle the fall out.
Coulson reaches his breaking point! S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra go head-to-head in a battle that will change Coulson’s world forever. While Daisy and her team of Inhumans fight to keep Hydra at bay, Coulson and Fitz take the ultimate risk.
“Maveth” episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air Tuesday, December 8 at 9PM on ABC.
