Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women and nonbinary folks who inspire us. This includes fictional characters in geeky media and creators as well. They are a prime example of empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy.
Sloane Hargreeves
Fast Facts:
Sloane Hargreeves (Génesis Rodríguez) was born on October 1, 1989, as one of 43 superpowered children brought into the world simultaneously. Eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) adopted Sloane and her six siblings — Marcus (Justin Cornwell), Ben (Justin H. Min), Fei (Britne Oldford), Alphonso (Jake Epstein), Jayme (Cazzie David) and Christopher — and raised them as the Sparrow Academy. Of course, Sloane grew up in an alternate timeline to the Umbrella Academy siblings.
Reginald rigorously trained Sloane and the others to fight crime, making them celebrities in their world. Sloane’s powers include gravity manipulation, meaning she can make herself and others fly and remove her opponent’s gravity, so they flail in the air. In addition, Sloane possesses an incredible intellect, particularly in the realm of astrophysics.
Umbrellas versus Sparrows
One day in 2019, the Umbrella Academy barged into the Sparrow Academy, which her siblings interpreted as a threat. After Marcus goes missing, Sloane accompanies Ben, Fei and Christopher to kidnap Luther Hargreeves (Tom Hopper) as a “tit for tat” with the Umbrella Academy.

Eventually, Sloane and Luther fall head over heels in love. Their warring families make their lives increasingly difficult. Later, the Sparrows and Umbrellas join forces to contain the Kugelblitz. Sloane contributes significantly to this with her advanced knowledge of astrophysics and gravity manipulation abilities.
Luther proposes to Sloane in a devastatingly romantic way before they learn their efforts to eradicate the Kugelblitz failed. With the apocalypse looming and the clock ticking, Sloane and Luther get married at The Hotel Obsidian, vowing to spend their final days on Earth together.
Reginald cuts their time short when he kills Luther. Despite this, a heartbroken Sloane agrees to assist Reginald in saving the universe. Enraged, Sloane kicks ass while our heroes wend their way through The Hotel Oblivion. Klaus (Robert Sheehan) utilizes his powers to bring Luther back temporarily from the Void so he can bid farewell to Sloane.

After our crew follows Reginald’s instructions to the letter, he double-crosses them, draining them of their powers so he can curate the timeline he wants. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) kills Reginald, commandeering his alien console and plopping them in a new timeline.
Unfortunately, Luther and the others arrive in the new timeline, but Sloane isn’t there. Thus, Luther sets out to find the love of his life.
The Real Deal:
Sloane is the real deal. Sure, she’s a soft-spoken dreamer, but she’s more than that. Sloane possesses kindness in spades. Her compassion is her greatest superpower. Additionally, Sloane’s genius-level intelligence is enviable, making her a force to be reckoned with. Of course, her innate abilities are impressive on their own — who wouldn’t want to manipulate gravity and fly?

Sloane can see people for who they are, stripped of artifice. She also brings out the best in those around her, and her keen sense of awareness is unparalleled. Don’t let her soft, empathetic personality fool you; Sloane is a bona fide badass fighter, drawing upon her powerful gifts to take down baddies. But, again, her compassion and boundless love are her most formidable qualities.
Why She Matters:
Sloane is multifaceted, nuanced and kind and doesn’t allow the negativity around her to dull her shine. She loves wholeheartedly and passionately, and her loyalty to her loved ones is second to none. Sloane possesses an impressive depth of feeling and wears her heart on her sleeve. She only wants to live a happy life with her husband, Luther!
Sloane is proof positive that kindness isn’t a weakness, and showing your emotions is a sign of bravery and inherent strength. She shows us that women don’t have to just be “strong” or “emotional” — women are complex and can be everything.
