Just a few short months after announcing the formation of their in house television and film studio, Activision Blizzard has a two season deal for their first project, Skylanders Academy, with Netflix.  The animated series will premiere in Fall 2016.

The series follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a group of heroes with unique elemental skills and personalities who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers and showing the next wave of Academy cadets how to do things the “Skylander way.”

Based on the bestselling video game created by Toys For Bob, Skylanders was one of the pioneers of the toys-to-life category.  Similar to Lego Dimensions, Nintendo Amiibo, and the now defunct Disney Infinity, Skylanders requires you to collect the character figures to play in game.  Or you can do what I and some of my friends do, collect the figures but not have the game.

Deadline reports this if the first of several projects coming from Activision Blizzard Studios, including Call of Duty, Starcraft, Destiny, and Diablo, just to name a few.  Skylanders Academy was fully financed in-house although the the animation is being done but TeamTO Studio is France.

Skylanders Academy gives us the opportunity to approach narrative storytelling with the same level of quality and excellence that millions of Skylanders fans have come to expect from the game,” said Activision Blizzard Studios Co-President Stacey Sher. “We’re inspired by our fans’ excitement for these characters and have worked hard to bring these characters to life with stories our fans will love.”

Activision Blizzard has a deep catalog of popular games to pull from and keeping the development and production of the projects in house is a smart move.  I can’t help but wonder if Warcraft would have been a better product if it had been financed, developed, and produced completely in house.  As has been proven with Marvel, when you keep the IP home with the people that know and understand the subject matter the best, amazing things can and do happen.
