Skip and Loafer is considered one of the best romance animes of the decade by many anime fans. The characters are so genuinely written that it feels like looking back at a high school memory. While it is a hit with romance fans, I think this show’s coming-of-age aspect has much to offer. I see so many life lessons I wish I could tell the younger me when I watch this show. Since my time machine is broken and I can’t contact the younger me, I’m going to share those life lessons with you instead. Here are six life lessons from Skip and Loafer.
Friendships Work at a Distance
The anime’s main character, Mitsumi, is an exchange student from a small town far from Tokyo. While navigating life in the big city, we see her constantly maintaining contact with her best friend from back home, Fumi. Not only that, but Fumi is a consistent source of courage for Mistumi.

Many times in our lives, friends come and go, and it can be hard to maintain those friendships when we no longer go to the same school, work at the same place or even live in the same city. Skip and Loafer shows us that not only is it possible to keep in touch, but you can also keep the friendship flourishing.
Ask for Help
The first episode shows the importance of asking for help when Mitsumi becomes hopelessly lost at Tokyo’s confusing train station. This is echoed throughout the show as characters learn to lean on each other and ask for help on other things. When Mitsumi needs to learn to play volleyball, she reaches out to her classmates.

Truly no one is immune to needing help here and there. When we grow older, it can be challenging to ask people for support, especially if we aren’t close. However, we could miss many opportunities if we never ask anyone for assistance. Mitsumi wouldn’t be a class rep if she hadn’t taken the plunge and asked Shima for guidance in getting to school. So, don’t be shy, and ask for help when needed.
Ignore Gossip
This is a tricky one that I struggle with as an adult. Gossip can be extremely enticing, especially about someone we are close with. In Skip and Loafer, there are rumors about a lot of characters. Just as many people think Shima is a player, as folks are saying Mitsumi is the secret boss of the school. Neither of these rumors is true, but the gossip doesn’t stop characters from believing in them.
When Mitsumi and Makato first meet in episode three, Makato is convinced Mitsumi is the secret boss of the school and holds some kind of immense power. But after getting to know the real Mitsumi, Makato realizes the rumors are untrue. The two become quick friends after that.

It makes me wonder how quickly they could have become friends if Makato had never been paralyzed with fear by the thought of Mitsumi being dubious. It just goes to show how gossip can ruin possible friendships and a healthy high school life. Next time you hear gossip, take it with a grain of salt. The person who is the subject of scary rumors might be a great friend.
Friendships Can Take Time
Some friendships, like Mitsumi’s and Shima’s, seem to happen instantly. Strangers one day, friends the next. That isn’t the norm for everyone, though. Fumi, Mitsumi’s oldest friend, needed a lot of time to warm up to Mitsumi before their friendship took over. Another character, Mika, intentionally disliked Mistumi too. It took a while, but eventually, the two became genuine friends.

It can be challenging when we start a new school or job and don’t instantly get along with everyone. While it would be nice if we could all be instant friends, sometimes we need time and breathing space for relationships. Do your best, and friendships will come.
Be Honest About How You Feel
In episode six, we get something close to a fight between the main characters, Shima and Mitsumi. They both have different ideas about what the other is feeling and act awkwardly around each other. Mitsumi feels bad for lecturing Shima about coming to school. In reality, Shima never cared about the lecture. Shima feels hurt that Mitsumi heard and may believe rumors about him. Instead of telling each other outright, they have a full awkward day before finally confronting each other and discussing it.
Once things are talked out, they are in a better place. It shows just how important it is to share when we are hurt or what our feelings are with friends.
Try New Things (With Friends)
It can be hard to ignore things that are limited edition, but it can also be difficult not to stick with what you already know. Sometimes, we get comfortable with our life and routine, and straying can be scary. After all, why would you want to join a volleyball competition if you don’t play sports? Why would you order an expensive drink if you’re not sure you’ll like it?

Well, Skip and Loafer‘s answer would be: Why not? Sure, new things can be scary, but they can also be fun. So, be like Mitsumi and get that limited edition drink, play that sport and go to karaoke.
