Due to recent world events, more and more people are working from home. For some people, this isn’t anything new and they will be used to organizing their own space and time. For others, being away from the office and finding space in the house that can create a suitable working environment can be tricky.

In this blog post we look at the best ways to create and organize a home office. You won’t need a big budget, just a little creativity

Creating a Space

When creating an area specifically for work you will need to consider a few things. Firstly, does the area have plenty of natural light? This is important – especially if you have limited space. Natural light is also conducive to a more creative and productive space. As well as being better for mental health. Another important factor to consider is where the office space is located. Find a space in your home where you can comfortably fit a desk and chair. Look for a quiet area where you will not be disturbed. Some people have limited space in their houses or apartments for a home office and therefore might not find space for a permanent desk – if this is the case then take a look at fold-up desks or furniture that can function on two levels – perhaps your dining table can be used as a desk during the day? If possible, it’s always a good idea to work well away from the bedroom, as it can create a negative sleeping environment – if you can see your desk and laptop you may find it difficult to “switch off” and unwind during the night.

Support & Comfort

If you are working from home then it’s absolutely vital that your back is comfortable and supported. Ideally your table should be at the right height for working and not too high or low – using a dining table and coffee table isn’t ideal but we understand that some people may have limited space in their home. Invest in a good office chair which will fully support your back. If you don’t have space then prop up your back with plenty of firm cushions.

Storage is Key

Small spaces need storage – especially if you are using them as a home office. If you have paperwork and sensitive information such as the personal information of your clients or customers then you will need to invest in a good lockable storage cabinet. Cardboard file organizers are also an inexpensive way to organize paperwork. To make the most of small spaces, think about adding some shelves to the space – perfect for books and ornaments to give the area a personal touch. One of the benefits of working from home is that you can really personalize the space and make it yours – so go ahead and add photos and artwork, the space needn’t look sterile!

Keep it Clean & Cool

No home office is complete without a waste paper bin, but have you considered also buying a shredder? This will minimize waste and offers a more secure way of disposing paperwork, letters and other personal information. Working from home means no more arguments about the air-conditioning! Invest in a good tower fan for the summer months – take a look at Unclutterer for some inspiration. It’s always a good idea to have a few indoor plants too, not only do they create a calm and relaxing environment and increase creativity but some plants actually clean the air too.

In conclusion, we believe that anyone can create a tidy and functional home office, regardless of the amount of space you have in your house or apartment. Essentially, all you need is a small desk and a decent chair that will fully support your back. Storage solutions will transform any cluttered space into an organized work area – take a look at filing cabinets, shelves, storage cubes and drawers.
