Science is one of the most essential subjects in the primary years of school education. Even though you can choose not to continue with science in the later years, there are many advantages if you do. Science is a part of our day to day lives, and almost every natural or man-made object around us represents one or more of the scientific concepts.

Most of our decisions are also impacted by scientific thoughts or inquiries. Human beings need to find solutions to problems around them, whether it is due to curiosity or for something essential. The process by which we find those solutions can have multiple scientific implications. Think of a home DIY project or fixing a leaking tap, and you will need to use science to achieve the desired results.

The application of scientific methods and inquiries are more direct for your classwork or homework answers for science subjects. You are usually given a problem or a question, to which you need to find a scientific explanation and then relate that explanation with your knowledge or expertise. Often you are required to find scientific evidence to support your explanations or theories.

If you conduct a scientific experiment, you would need to follow a similar course of action. You will first conduct research on the given topic, draw theory, and carry out experiments based on the theory. Then you would need to evaluate the data drawn from the experiments and reach a conclusion for your research.

The ability to solve problems and critical thinking are the two most essential abilities students are required to possess and develop while learning science in school. Both these abilities are also important attributes to be carried on in life even the educational life is over.

Here are the generalized descriptions and some of the characteristics of the three major courses that students often take up when they choose to study science.


Physics is the study of all matters in the universe and their journey through time and space. It is also the study of various forms of energy, forces, and subatomic particles. Studying physics is essential to understand how each element in the entire universe behaves. Students study physics to learn the following:

  • How the universe works and why certain things happen the way they happen.
  • The formation of Earth, the planets, and the various other astronomical bodies, including the entire universe.
  • How the energies and forces work on earth creating natural events such as rain, earthquakes, storms, and many others.
  • How the technologies work and how to use it for technological advancement.
  • The study of time and it’s relation with space and matter.
  • The existence and study of dark matter and antimatter.


Chemistry is the study of the structure, composition, and properties of all types of matter along with any changes that occur when two matters interact. The study of chemistry helps students to learn the following:

  • Understand the chemical structure and composition of various living and non-living things.
  • How various substances, their physical, and chemical characteristics are formed.
  • How various substances interact or react with each other, and how that can be utilized in human lives.
  • How various living organisms function at a cellular level and the chemical interactions they go through.
  • How the human brain and other body parts interact with each other to achieve various functions of the human body.


Biology is the study of natural sciences connected with all living organisms. The subject includes the study of their evolution, structure, growth, various parts, functions of the parts, and many other properties. Some courses are related to the study of biology. Examples are human biology, zoology, botany, and microbiology. The various things student learn from Biology are:

  • The structure of living organisms, their body parts and organs, functions or the organs and body parts and maintenance of health.
  • Evolution and adaptation of various living species and their behavior in the environment they live in.
  • The connection between all living organisms, co-dependencies between various species, the importance of the food chain, and how everything is connected to the overall well being of the planet.
  • Study of human health, diseases, and health issues that humans face, their preventive methods, and their cures.
  • Importance of the study of microbes, their functions in the environment, advantages, and disadvantages to human beings.
  • Importance of understanding, controlling, and preventing diseases, epidemics, and pandemics.


There are other sub courses of science as well such as geology, environmental science, astronomy, and few other specialization courses. You can choose to specialize in any of the sub courses in college or university and make a career in that subject, but you will need a thorough knowledge of the three major science courses.
