Shuri Is Getting Her Own Comic Run This Fall

We’ve learned some really exciting news today! According to Bustle, our new favorite Disney princess Shuri is getting her own run. Even more exciting? It’ll be written by science fiction and fantasy author Nnedi Okorafor! It’s a match made in heaven. So what’s the comic about?

Okorafor will be bringing Shuri between a rock and a hard place. According to the synopsis, Shuri may be happiest in the lab, but when her brother is lost in a space mission, the leadership of Wakanda comes into question. She would rather “be testing gauntlets than throwing them”, so what will she do? The welfare of Wakanda is in her hands, will she act on it? We’ll have to find out later this year. Okorafor spoke to Bustle about the project.

[Shuri is] an African young woman of genius level intelligence who is obsessed with technology and has traveled spiritually so far into the past that she’s seen Wakanda before it was Wakanda. The Ancestors call her Ancient Future. And she’s super ambitious. What do I love about her? Alllll that and more. She’s a character in the Marvel Universe who really sings to me.

Given her popularity in the Marvel films (thanks to Letitia Wright), it only makes sense for them to explore this character more. This will be her first solo comic run since her creation in 2005! How has it been this long since someone’s given the spotlight to her? But I echo my statement above, Okorafor and Shuri are a match made in heaven. Given Okorafor’s award winning works in science fiction and fantasy, with a focus on afrofuturisim plus her recent release Black Panther: Long Live the King, Wakanda is the perfect place for her talent. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with!

What do you think of a Shuri comic run? How excited are you? Check out the cover below and let us know! Be sure come back to Geek Girl Authority for more awesome females in comics. Shuri will be in comic stores in October of this year!
