DISCLAIMER: This recap of Shoresy Season 2 Episode 2, “Skill vs Will,” contains spoilers. Proceed at your peril.

Americans have to be the best at everything. The boys are preparing to take on the Soo Hunt, but too many pretty distractions pull them in opposite directions. Plus, Michaels is still acting strange, Ziigwan and Shoresy are at each other’s throats now more than ever (I think we’ll see them together soon) and Frankie’s the top (bull)dog.

“Skill vs Will” is another delightful outing that raises the stakes considerably. I’d argue the stakes are higher this season than in Season 1. I love all the callbacks from not only the last episode but the last season. The running verbal gags are also a blast, from Shoresy’s “Tee-hee” whenever Sanguinet and Miigwan are being cute to him remarking that the calendar will bite them in the ass.

Ready to delve into “Skill vs Will”? Let’s get to it.

We open with Shoresy (Jared Keeso) having breakfast with Laura Mohr (Camille Sullivan), the journalist he’s sweet on. She wants a quote for her next piece about the Bulldogs and their 21-game winning streak. Shoresy blatantly flirts with her, but it’s not enough to break her down. As Laura departs, she asks Shoresy to text her a quote. She also wonders how Shoresy describes her to his friends. He rattles off a list of her admirable attributes. It’s enough to make any girl blush.

Later, Shoresy supervises Dolo (Jonathan-Ismaël Diaby), Goody (Andrew Antsanen), Hitch (Terry Ryan), Michaels (Ryan McDonell), JJ Frankie JJ (Max Bouffard) and Fish (Jacob Smith) while they exercise in the gym. The boys are hitting the weights hard.

Nat (Tasya Teles), Miigwan (Keilani Elizabeth Rose) and Ziigwan (Blair Lamora) pull Sanguinet (Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat) and Shoresy aside to deliver some news: there’s demand for a JJ Frankie JJ calendar. Shoresy wonders why the community wants only Frankie to have an entire calendar to himself.

Nat and the others try to explain the concept of a “bear” in the gay community to Sanguinet and Shoresy. Frankie is considered a bear, and the gays run the world (as they should). You must appease them. Later, Shoresy, Sanguinet and the boys crush sandos. The gang can’t believe how in-demand Frankie is. That’s just the way she goes, b’ys.

But Shoresy’s gonna Shoresy, so he lets it slide … for now. Next, we see him reffing a game wherein Cory (Bourke Cazabon) and Liam (Keegan Long) play. We hear the requisite “Shut the f*ck up, Shoresy” after our titular mother-loving chirper dishes out some devastating burns. Don’t go toe-to-toe in this department, fellas. You won’t win — mostly because Shoresy is too busy lovin’ up on your moms.

Later, Nat discloses apprehension regarding the American team, the Soo Hunt. Americans have to be the best at everything. Canada is the only country standing between America and its conquering of hockey. Plus, they send their players to camps up north to learn Canadian techniques. They have the skill and the will to win. Nat’s still worried that the Bulldogs are too busy with their lady friends to focus. Shoresy’s gotta get’em focused. Shoresy insists they’ll never lose again, which is a fun callback to the series premiere episode title.

Meanwhile, we see the Jims (Jon Mirasty, Brandon Nolan, Jordan Nolan) playing a game of Reach for the Top at the prison where they’re guards. They’re competing against inmates. I love that their team name is “Iroquiz” and how this scene is shot. And that the other team is called “Baroque Obama.” Anyway, it looks like they’re losing, which is a shame. The Jims are beauts.

Then, Shoresy compliments Dolo and Goody on having two women in their rooms at once. Hitch was eavesdropping on the whole shebang, but he’s super proud of his b’ys. At the calendar shoot, Frankie chats with his two ladies. Nat is shocked to learn he’s seeing more than one woman. How does he do it? He’s on the top of the world.

Next, Shoresy finds Fish on a first date at Peppi Panini while Michaels sits in the corner and eats paninis alone. Shoresy orders Fish, who used to score at least one goal per game, to get his act together. The Americans are coming. Shoresy also wonders what’s up with Michaels. Why is he consuming paninis by himself? I guess all goalies are weird. Outside, Shoresy and Michaels watch the American team run past them. The Soo Hunt players are already here.

Later, Shoresy reunites with Sanguinet and Nat to observe the Americans. The Soo Hunt stands on the other side of the rink, looking formidable and ready to rumble. Seriously, get these guys some Puppers. Nat, Shoresy and Sanguinet rattle off the names of important players. Nat impresses the significance of ensuring the Sudbury (Blueberry) Bulldogs beat the Soo Hunt for their last three games.

It’s time to focus up.

Do you think the Bulldogs will beat the Soo Hunt? Will the boys stop falling apart in the third act because they spend too much time between the sheets? Will Frankie’s newfound fanbase show up for the home team? Only time (and more episodes) will tell.
