DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Shoresy recap “Veteran Presence” has spoilers. Proceed at your peril, and give your balls a tug.
Welcome back, hockey players! Shoresy chugs along with another solid outing. While this series isn’t for everyone (if you don’t like Letterkenny, you won’t appreciate this show), the jokes are brilliant, and every cast member boasts pitch-perfect comedic timing. I also love that Shoresy uses real-life hockey players to fill out its cast.
“Veteran Presence” harbors more plot than a standard Letterkenny episode, striking the perfect balance between propelling the story forward and presenting its niche brand of humor. We’re only on episode two, and I’m head over heels for these characters.
Ready to delve into “Veteran Presence”? Let’s get to it.

We open with a clip of Dolo (Jonathan-Ismael Diaby, a real-life ice hockey player) rapping, seamlessly transitioning into the title card for Shoresy. Then, Shoresy (Jared Keeso) and Sanguinet (Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat) give Nat (Tasya Teles), the Sudbury Bulldogs general manager extraordinaire, a file containing the photos of the recruits. Nat, Miigwan (Keilani Rose) and Ziigwan (Blair Lamora) are bewildered to learn that Shoresy’s picks no longer play hockey. Dolo’s a rapper!
Side note: I love the joke about the GPS/PBS/PDF file and that Ziigwan refers to hockey players as “sluts.” We meet Dolo, Goody (Andrew Antsanen, who plays hockey), JJ Frankie JJ (Max Bouffard, also a real-life hockey player) and Hitch (Terry Ryan, who … you get the drift). We hear Shoresy tell Sanguinet to “shut the f*ck up” several times per his running gag, and Ziigwan pokes fun at Shoresy’s level of intellect.
Later, Shoresy and Sanguinet pick up the boys from the airport. They all crash at Shorsey’s place, wherein we meet his foul-mouthed parrot, Big Sexy. He intermittently tosses expletives into the conversation, namely “tit f*cker.” Good times!
Next, Shoresy heads over to The Doghouse to meet with reporter Laura Mohr (Camille Sullivan). They flirt heavily before Laura leaves, vowing not to attend Shoresy’s game against a Dutch team. Fun fact: this scene mentions Jonesy and Reilly (not by name, but still), making me giddy.
Nat calls Shoresy and tells him their “tough Natives” work at the local jail, so he must meet them there.
Shoresy, Sanguinet and the fellas encounter the three Jims (Brandon Nolan, Jordan Nolan and Jon Mirasty) at said jail. They refuse to be called anything else but Jim, which confuses things.
This scene cracks me up because it sheds light on Shoresy’s ardent and unexpected love for musical theater. He references Rent, Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. Color me impressed!
Later, the boys show up for a mixer at Nat’s house. I love the editing in this bit, as we see Nat and Ziigwan’s conversation interlock with Shoresy and the hockey players’ chat. Our dudes run the conversational gamut of culinary favorites because who doesn’t love talking about food?
Then, Nat and Ziigwan reveal their sponsor insisted the Bulldogs undergo a slight name change. They’re called the Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs, and their jerseys are a light blue. Shoresy thinks this is an outrage.
After the mixer, Shoresy heads to his other job of refereeing high school hockey. He finds Laura reporting on it, much to his dismay. Unfortunately, nobody cares about the Bulldogs.
Shoresy torments Liam (Keegan Long) and Cory (Bourke Cazabon), who seem to be their team’s requisite Jonesy and Reilly fillers.
Meanwhile, our newbies get in a scrap at Coulson because everyone could always go for a good scrap. This bout of violence impresses Nat. These guys will undoubtedly get butts in seats.

I’d love to pick Keeso and Jacob Tierney’s brains to learn how they create such nuanced, intricate jokes that are simultaneously written for a specific group and beloved by a broader audience. Teach me your ways!
Do you think the newly-dubbed Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs will finally win with talented recruits? Will they stop being “f*cking embarrassing”? How many times will Shoresy tell someone to give their balls a tug? Join me while I recap Shoresy, only on Geek Girl Authority.
