Shonda Rhimes and Shondaland production company is bringing to life the regency series Bridgerton. The adaptation is based on the best-selling romance novels of Julia Quinn. In true Shonda fashion, the series will feature an inclusive cast set with the British Regency-era. This past week, she took to her official Twitter to give us a look at what is coming. I am an avid reader of regency-era romance novels, but this series is by far one of my favorites. It has everything you need from well thought out characters, compelling storylines and lots of steamy drama. Let’s just say that if I had to pick anyone to produce a TV series to bring this to life, it would have had to been Shonda Rhimes.
The series will follow Daphne Brigderton (Phoebe Dynevor), the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family. She is making her debut onto the marriage market with the intention of following in her parents footsteps. She wants to find true love. But when her big brother Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) starts ruling out potential suitors, the famous scandal sheet Lady Whisledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) starts to attack Daphne’s reputation.

When all seems lost for Daphne, in walks in the highly desirable and rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). He is the catch of the season for every debutatnes’ mama. But it is Daphne who happens to find herself in his company. Even though both want nothing the other has to offer, it’s plain to see the attraction between the two. As sparks fly, the two will find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while also navigating society’s expections. Because in Regency-era London, everyone seems to know whats best.
The first season will showcase Shonda Rhimes’ adaptation of Julie Quinn’s first novel, The Duke and I. But there are eight other books that follow each of Violet Bridgerton’s (Ruth Gemmell) children! My only wish now is that each of them gets their season so we can watch as they all fall in love on their own. The best part surrounding Shonda Rhimes’ announcement? Bridgerton will premiere this Christmas! I now know exactly how I will be spending my day! A nice cup of hot chocolate, my softest blanket and an all day binge of one of my favorite love stories.
Bridgerton will air on Netflix starting December 25, 2020. Check out the images below for a glimpse into this stunningly inclusive love story.
