As strong women battled it out on the pitch for the women’s world cup final, we were given our first look at Disney’s upcoming adaptation of Mulan. The short teaser gave us a look at the heroine who would lead her country’s army to victory.
The teaser opens up with Mulan (Liu Yifei) riding in the peaceful countryside on her way back to her home. When she arrives, she’s told by her family that a match has been found for her. Distraught, Mulan slowly sits and accepts her fate (for now). At the matchmaker’s, she’s told her personality strengths: quiet, composed, graceful and disciplined. While the matchmaker finds these to be a good fit for a wife, they’re an even better fit for the life of a solider as we see Mulan train to be one of the greatest warriors. Defiant to her gender roles, she does what’s best for her family and her country. “It is my duty to fight,” Mulan concludes.
This first look was focusing purely on Mulan and I appreciate it for that. It was interesting to see that the villains were left pretty much out of the entire teaser. Sure there was an army at the end but we didn’t get to see one of the main antagonists, the witch (played by Gong Li). It’ll be exciting to see what role she has to play in the story. In the meantime, I’m very excited for the fight choreography. Wuxia films can be incredible cinematic marvels so I’m happy to see the film being influenced by them. Genuinely hoping for most of the battle sequences to be that way. For now, this is a promising first look at the latest Disney live-action adaptation.

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
Mulan charges into theaters March 27th, 2020.
