Almost every kid wants to be a superhero when they grow up, right? One of the few kids who doesn’t want that ability gains it in Shazam! and it’s going to be a learning curve. In the new trailer for the upcoming DC movie, Billy Batson (Asher Angel) discovers most (if not all) of his powers with the help of his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).
Billy Batson is chosen by a wizard (Djimon Hounsou) to gain all of his powers by just saying his name. When he does, he becomes the superhero Shazam (Zachary Levi). Since he doesn’t know what to do, he turns to the biggest fanboy he knows – Freddy – and they discover his powers together. He has super strength which involves flicking barrels and breaking bats, electricity manipulation, hyperspeed, flight and bullet immunity. With his great powers comes great responsibility as he has to learn how to control them. Like not electrocuting buses and having to catch them, for example.

The fun thing about this movie is that it’s set in a universe where the other DC heroes either exist or are still comics. For example, Freddy is wearing a Wonder Woman shirt with the film’s logo. Shazam also tosses a giant Batman toy at his enemy Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong), telling Batman to “get him” (which makes me laugh every time). In the same aisle you can see a Superman outfit for young boys, some Cyborg toys, and more. At one point he’s even testing if he can leap buildings in a single bound like Superman can. Spoiler alert – he can’t. Let’s see if Captain Sparkle-fingers can join the ranks of some of the greatest heroes.
The film is bound to be a lot of fun and we can’t wait to see it. If the film is a success, then DC is truly on the right path of making individuals films without having to tie to the same universe. It could make for more fun and interesting movies to watch.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
Shazam! crashes his way into theaters April 5th, 2019.
