Acrophobes, you may want to proceed with caution. On Monday, Marvel unveiled a new clip from the highly anticipated Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In the said clip, we see our titular hero battling baddies on some dangerously high scaffolding.

It opens with Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) urging his friend Katy (Awkwafina) to forge ahead without him while enemies pursue them. After she flees, he engages in a stunning display of fight choreography and acrobatics while balancing on scaffolding that’s precariously fixed to the side of a skyscraper.

Now, director and scribe Destin Daniel Cretton sat with Fandango to discuss the film along with the aforementioned snippet. Here, he dives into the influences behind the scaffold scuffle:

This is a really exciting scene. Brad Allan was our second unit director and he and one of our great choreographers, Andy Cheng, choreographed this fight sequence. One of Brad Allan’s heroes is Buster Keaton.

You’ll see a lot of Buster Keaton-like storytelling throughout this sequence, a lot of physical comedy, a lot of setups and payoffs. It’s just a really exciting sequence and a small taste of what our movie has to offer in terms of its action.

I love that Buster Keaton inspired this sequence! In the interview, Cretton also reveals his thoughts regarding what kind of film Shang-Chi is. He describes it as a “classic kung fu film and a family drama, but it’s also really funny.” I’m sold!
