I am squealing over here like a small child on their birthday or Christmas. The wonderful people at Netflix dropped another trailer for their upcoming adaptation of Leigh Bardugo‘s fantasy novels Shadow and Bone. And this one is pulling all the stops! It has action, intrigue, mystery and magic – everything needed to get us hooked. It also introduces the basics of the story we will be experiencing within the first season and the importance of Jessie Mei Li‘s character Alina Starkov.

The new Shadow and Bone trailer opens with Alina and Mal (Archie Renaux) aboard a vessel within the Fold. Quickly things begin to fall apart and we watch as Alina unleashes this unknown power that emanates light from her body. We overhear a man explaining that the light is what saved him – the light of a sun summoner. In the next moment, we see General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) testing Alina’s powers and then the scene jumps to Kaz (Freddy Carter) telling Inej (Amita Suman) that she is real before we get flashes of a war.

It becomes pretty clear that the whole world is after Alina’s power. About halfway through the trailer, she asks if she is a prisoner. General Kirigan replies that they all are until the two can enter the Fold and destroy it from within. Alina has quite the load on her shoulders with being wanted by everyone and having the power to save them all. The trailer does a great job showing us that she isn’t perfect either, struggling to use her power before eventually mastering the ability to produce a supernova in her hands, which is pretty freaking cool!

The Shadow and Bone trailer wraps up with a few shots of Alina with the Stag, flashes of Kaz’s crew in action, Mal and the military and what appears to be Alina and a crew back in the Fold. The entire trailer opens up so many questions and I know we won’t get answers until it releases. But a few that I feel like are important enough to share. First off, who can Alina trust? It appears everyone wants a piece of her! Second, how can she bring down the Fold? What will she need to sacrifice, because they always need to sacrifice something!

The series stars Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Ben Barnes, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan and Calahan Skogman.

Shadow and Bone is set to release on Netflix on April 23, 2021. You can check out the new trailer below! How excited are you to dive into the Grishverse? Let us know in the comments below and on social media?
