During the IGN Fan Fest this morning, we got our first look at Netflix‘s adaptation for Shadow and Bone. Leigh Bardugo‘s world is dangerous, beautiful and rich with magic and intrigue. And from the trailer, it looks like Netflix is giving us exactly that and so much more.

Bardugo’s high fantasy series occurs in a war-torn world where Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) has unleashed an extraordinary power that could save them all. The Shadow and Bone trailer opens with shots of the countryside and the Shadow Fold, a swath of darkness that is impossible to cross through without extreme casualties. Alina joins a crew with her friend Mal (Archie Renaux). He is concerned for her, but she promises that she can handle it.

Within the Shadow Fold, winged creatures attack Alina’s vessel and right before one can tear Mal apart, a blinding light erupts from the Shadow Fold before the Netflix logo appears. The trailer continues, but now Alina is back outside of the Shadow Fold. She is taken to meet General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), who questions what she saw. She explains the events and he marks her arm; we see another flash of light. He asks her what she is before the trailer becomes flashes of clips. We see her being taking and Mal trying to get to her, Alina at court, shots of fighting and so much more.

The Shadow and Bone trailer ends with General Kirigan asking Alina once again what she is. She’s a mapmaker, of course. Well, it seems that Kirigan believes that he and the mapmaker are going to change the world. The shot changes from his tent at the camp to the two in front of royalty, where he unleashes Alina’s powers once more. As everyone around them shields themselves from the light, the logo appears and the trailer ends.

It is one impressive trailer giving us enough information on the story to get us intrigued, action to get us excited and enough of the three main characters to begin to craft theories in our heads. Fans of the books will see how Netflix pulled iconic scenes right out of the books to bring them to life. We can not wait to binge this series and uncover the mysteries that lie within.

Shadow and Bone stars Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Ben Barnes, Kit Young, Amita Suman, Freddy Carter, Danielle Galligan and Calahan Skogman. It will release here on Netflix starting April 23, 2021.
