Severance Season 3

After a bonkers Season 2 that culminated in yet another upheaval at Lumon Industries, Apple TV+ didn’t even wait a day after the finale to announce that the sun would rise again on Kier Eagan’s vision for the world. One can only hope we won’t be waiting three years for the third season of Severance.

The scope of the series is such that Severance Season 2 could only truly bring some sort of closure to one thread in the plot tapestry. There are many directions Severance Season 3 could go, and only creator Dan Erickson truly knows what they will address next.

Responses From TPTB

Erickson is not only the show’s creator but also the head writer and executive producer. “The idea of getting to make more Severance with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world’s finger traps combined,” he said in response to news of the renewal. “I can’t wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people.”

The creative team has had a lot of fun incorporating the world of Severance into their promotion of the show. On January 14, 2025, in anticipation of the January 17 Season 2 premiere, most of the stars participated in a pop-up event in New York’s Grand Central Station.

In addition, director and executive producer Ben Stiller and star Adam Scott have a podcast — aptly called The Severance Podcast with Ben Still & Adam Scott — wherein they take deep dives into each Severance episode with other members of the cast and creative team joining as guests.

“Making ‘Severance’ has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” Ben Stiller went on record to say the day of the renewal. “While I have no memory of this, I’m told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well.”

What Happens Next for Mark Scout?

Adam Scott, who is also an executive producer on the show, probably had the best in-character response to the renewal. “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work with Ben, Dan, the incredible cast and crew, Apple and the whole Severance team. Oh hey, also — not a huge deal — but if you see my innie, please don’t mention any of this to him. Thanks.”

Season 2 saw Scott’s character, Mark Scout, undergo (more) brain surgery, relive the memories of life with his wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) and kill a man. Meanwhile, his Innie Mark S. experienced some firsts of his own — a nosebleed, sex and a full 48 hours outside. Not all at the same time. Without exaggeration, Season 2 took us to strange and unexpected places.

The Season 2 finale ended with an oddly conclusive-feeling yet totally open-ended scene that smacked of an artistic homage to The Graduate. It leaves Mark, Helly/Helena (Britt Lower) and Gemma with a lot to unpack. Things have also changed significantly for Milchick (Tramell Tillman), Cobel (Patricia Arquette) and Dylan (Zach Cherry).

Currently missing in action but with stories left to tell are Irving (John Turturro), Ricken (Michael Chernus) and Miss Huang (Sarah Bock). There’s also the goats. We mustn’t forget the goats. The Department of Mammalian Nurturable is an enigma wrapped in ritual. So many questions, and we can only hope Severance Season 3 shines a light on one of them.

Justice for Innies?

At the heart of Severance‘s moral quandary is whether Innies have a right to life purely because they are sentient within their arena of existence. Because if they do, creating them through the severance process without a way to liberate them is irresponsible and reprehensible. So, how do you time-share a body? With this renewal, Apple TV+ gives the Severance team and audiences at least one more season to figure it out.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Severance are streaming now on Apple TV+
