September 2019’s Most Anticipated Video Games

Emily Rose Jacobson

This September has no shortage of video games! The entire month is packed with titles ranging from AAA third-person shooters and classic remasters, to games where you play as…a goose?  Here’s a “gander” (we promise this is our only goose pun) at our Most Anticipated Games for September 2019!

River City Girls

Who Saves the World? Girls! WayForward‘s River City Girls playfully turns the River City Ransom storyline on its head. This time, it’s Kunio and Riki (the main male protagonists from River City Ransom) who have been captured. Likewise, it’s up to their Girlfriends, Kyoko and Misako, to rescue them! Along with the game’s main storyline, players can take on a number of side quests, purchase unique items from the store, and more! Moreover, River City Girls features single and co-op gameplay. So you and a friend can save your boyfriends together. If you’re a fan of side-scrolling brawlers, like the original River City Ransom series or Double Dragon, then this is a game you should definitely pick up and play!

River City Girls is now available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Widower’s Sky

Overall, this year has been one of the best for visually stunning games, and Widower’s Sky is no exception. From software and game developer Whaleo, we are getting this breathtaking world to journey through. The game’s story follows a father and son as they traverse this strange land as they head home after the death of their beloved wife and mother. Moreover, the father will need to protect his son against wildlife and machines while also making sure he is well-fed. Widower’s Sky is not your normal adventure survival game, but one that will pull at the heartstrings of players with its narrative and atmosphere.

Widower’s Sky is now available on the PC.

Mental House

September 1st is the official first day of Halloween, just accept it. Furthermore, this means that horror games are going to be popping up left and right. Mental House from Occult Games is looking to be a great addition to the list. It includes your typical horror mechanics, dark lit areas, something creepy in the dark that you need to run and hide from, along with puzzles to help progress, and an interactive system for breaking and disabling locks. Altogether, I am beyond ready to be scared out of my trousers this Fall and have high hopes Mental House will succeed.

Mental House is now available for the PC.

Gears 5

From The Coalition comes the sixth installment in the Gears of War series: Gears 5. As the player traverses through the world of Sera, Corporal Kait Diaz will uncover the secret history of her family, as well as the origins of the Locust themselves. Likewise, as the war between humanity and the new threat of the Swarm intensifies, a parallel conflict grows inside Kait’s mind. She will struggle to reconcile her human loyalty to her fellow Gears with her Locust heritage from her grandmother. In regards to gameplay, online and split-screen options have returned for Gears 5’s Co-op mode, and Horde mode has been updated with new “Ultimate Abilities” (ex: invisibility for Kait, airstrikes for J.D., etc.).  A hovering robotic drone named JACK has been introduced as a new support character option for three or more players in Co-op campaign and Horde modes. While JACK is unable to take cover from enemy fire, JACK can heal other characters, turn them invisible, or use his Ultimate Ability (“HiJACK”…pun intended). Overall, Gears 5 builds on what works for the Gears of War franchise and is refined with modern gameplay elements, including open-world exploration. And if anything, this ambitious sequel will get Gears of War fans excited for whatever comes next.

Gears 5 will be available on September 10, 2019 for the Xbox One and PC.

Greedfall

Greedfall, the latest action role-playing game developed by France-based studio Spiders, is set in a 17th century-inspired fantasy world on the recently colonized island of Teer Fradee. On this island, the main character is driven by the need to cure a disease ravaging their homeland. Character development occurs by finding “skill altars” throughout the island and adding the acquired skill points to your skill tree. Moreover, there are three broad branches on the skill tree: Warrior (melee combat), Technical (equipment upgrades, battlefield control, and ranged combat), and Magic (offensive spells). As the player explores Teer Fradee, they will find that the island is more dangerous at night, as more hostile creatures will start to appear. Furthermore, if the player needs a break from combat, you can find and rest at campsites. Here, you can talk with your companion characters, switch out your current party, craft or upgrade items at the workbench, and fast travel to other settlements. Fueled by the same love of story-driven RPGs that studios like BioWare are famous for, Spiders has made the kind of video game that becomes more fascinating the more you look at it.

Greedfall will be released on September 10, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Borderlands 3

Mayhem is Coming! Borderlands 3, the next installment in the Borderlands series developed by Gearbox Software, picks up some time after the death of Handsome Jack. Since the destruction of Pandora, two new foes have emerged, The Calypso Twins. Likewise, they are after the newly discovered Vaults on Pandora, and it’s up to you to stop them. You can choose from four characters to play as: Amara the Siren, FL4K the Beastmaster, Moze the Gunner, and Zane the Operative. Each character has their own unique abilities and skill trees that will allow for unique and customizable play. For instance, you may build out Moze into an offensive destroyer. Meanwhile, another player may build out Moze to be more tech and defense-heavy. Along with this, you can also beat baddies with your friends in Multiplayer mode. In this mode, players can opt for Borderlands 3′s new per-player loot system, or the traditional multiplayer loot sharing system. Moreover, up to 4 players can fight and explore together in the world of Pandora. So get ready to get hunting, Vault Hunter!

Borderlands 3 will be available on September 13, 2019 for the Xbox One, PS4, PC and Google Stadia.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

One of the most beloved Legend of Zelda titles is getting a remaster! Link’s Awakening captures the initial spirit and adventure of the first game in a beautiful 3-D remastered world. In this remaster, Link’s sword, shield, and upgrades are always equipped. This allows for more items to be used via the action buttons. Additionally, this version of Link’s Awakening is not played “top-down” (i.e from an aerial perspective). This design element in the remaster has a number of classic fans conflicted. However, I believe the new angled perspective adds a fresh and exciting take on the game. Likewise, as you master the dungeons in the main story, you will have the chance to earn “Chambers” (dungeon rooms). You can then arrange these chambers into your own custom dungeons in the new “Chamber Dungeon” feature. Ultimately, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening promises fun for old and new fans alike.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will be released on September 20, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch.
