Sense8 is a Netflix series by the Wachowski siblings.  You know them, they are the ones responsible for the Matrix Trilogy, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending.  Love them or hate them they bring a unique view to storytelling and Sense8 is no different.

If you aren’t familiar with the show the first season, released in 2015, tells the tale of 8 people, scattered across the globe, that are connected to each other spiritually and mentally.  Called a Cluster, we are lead to believe this group of 8 is not unique.  However, these Clusters somehow pose a threat and are hunted down by whom we do not yet know.  The first season set up the world and the characters, gave them their motivation and backstory.  It starts slow but then moves with the quickness of a runaway freight train during the second half of the season.  It’s all about understanding, human connection, and, no matter our circumstance, we are not all that different from one another.

For a long time after release, there was no word on if the show would return for a second season.  Word finally came with a release date of May 2017 for Season 2.  This trailer for a Christmas Special was a pleasant surprise and serves as the first episode of Season 2.  While the siblings have faltered with big budget theatrical films, I feel the longer form of episodic television fits the sibling’s storytelling sensibilities beautifully.

I highly recommend it but it is not for kids and definitely not something you can stream at work.  There are a few very graphic sex scenes which is something I normally despise as slowing down the story, messing with the pacing, or just down right unnecessary.  However, the scenes in this show, while graphic, serve the greater story and don’t actually grind anything to a halt.  Like I said, it’s about human connection and, for some people, sex is a necessary part of that.
