See the Magic of Creating Supreme Leader Snoke in STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI

Erin Lynch

ILM are wizards. Fact. But in serious, one of the best looking animated characters in Star Wars: The Last Jedi was Supreme Leader Snoke. With little hairs on his face, to spittle flying out of his mouth, his movements due to his size. Everything was wonderfully done. And thanks to ILM’s YouTube channel, we get a sneak peak into what it takes to create such a complex character as Snoke is.

In the video, we get to see all the layers that are put in to bringing the character to life. Starting with Andy Serkis‘ brilliant motion capture performance. You can see all the tricks they used on set including Serkis performing on a raised platform, using a bust of the character and more. One of my favorite tricks they used on set included using a large Snoke arm to use on Rey’s face – it’s so simple and effective! And of course watching Serkis perform is always a treat.

We also have the more technical side of the process. The layer of muscle, the layer of of skin, lighting details. Honestly, watching the process is always fascinating. Seeing all the work that goes into mere seconds in film is incredible. You’ll have to take a gander yourself and see how these Oscar Nominees have done. I think they did quite incredibly, if I may throw my humble opinion in there.

What do you think of the clip? Are you geeky over effects, too? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more animated fun. Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes to homes on March 13th.
