“When the world is taken over by darkness, a new force will arise.”
India’s history-making sci-fi epic, Project K, took SDCC 2023 by storm at the hallowed geeky annual event, with the cast and director/writer unveiling exciting first-look footage for fans. This marked the first time India has graced the stage at San Diego Comic-Con. Panelists included director/writer Nag Ashwin and stars Prabhas, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone. In addition, we learned the science fiction feature has a new name: Kalki 2898 AD.
Kalki 2898 AD follows “a modern-day avatar of Vishnu, a Hindu god, who is believed to have descended to earth to protect the world from evil forces.” Kalki is the 10th and final incarnation of Vishnu in Hindu mythology. The god appears in Kalki 2898 AD to eliminate the Kali Yuga, the age of darkness.

With support from Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media, the movie’s international marketing and distribution partner, this cinematic event promises a captivating story set in a futuristic “Spice Punk” world. Variety reports the budget is around $75 million. That means Project K has the distinction of breaking another record as one of the most expensive Indian films ever.
Folks, the visuals are stunning in this teaser. The world looks unique and immersive, with an original premise that’s a breath of fresh air in an industry that often relies on remakes, adaptations and reboots. I’m excited to see this genre flick on the big screen.
