Energize! SDCC 2023 explored the final frontier on Friday with the Official 50th Star Trek Animated Celebration panel. Said panel gave fans a sneak peek into the franchise’s salute to the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Animated Series. Additionally, Trekkies were privy to a handful of exciting announcements in the world of Trek.
We’re getting five new animated promotional spots featuring fan-favorite characters to commemorate the above-mentioned anniversary. This includes Jonathan Frakes lending his voice to Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru and Armin Shimerman as Quark. The panel also unveiled character designs for the animated versions of these characters. You can tune in for the promotional spots later this year.

But that’s not all — Casper Kelly will release a comic with IDW Publishing called Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier. We can expect a digital release in September on StarTrek.com, but New York Comic Con attendees will have access to physical copies. SDCC 2023 debuted a first look at two pages from the comic for fans.
Other fun announcements in the Star Trek universe include the release of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 (Episodes 11-20) on Digital today, with a DVD/Blu-ray release slated for September 26, 2023. In addition, there will be Star Trek: Lower Decks fan screenings domestically and internationally to celebrate Star Trek Day on September 8.

Y’all, I’m thrilled about what’s in store for this franchise. It’s hard to believe it’s been half a century since The Animated Series (even though I wasn’t alive then). Here’s hoping we’ll see more delightful surprises before the end of the year.
