The Thunderbolts are coming to Marvel! News from today’s jam-packed Marvel Studio’s San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel is blowing my mind. But out of all the marvelous news, one thing that really has Mantis antennas perked up is the news about Marvel’s next big team of heroes (or are they villains?), the Thunderbolts!
During Marvel Studios’ first Hall H panel in three years, Marvel President Kevin Feige revealed that the Thunderbolts film will close out the MCU’s Phase 5, with a release date set for July 26, 2024.

Thunderbolts Director Will Be Jake Schreier
News that a Thunderbolts movie was in development first broke last month, with the announcement that Jake Schreier (Paper Town, Robot and Frank) was tapped to direct the film and Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) on board to write the script. Although if you ask me, the first teaser that this film was in the works was back in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode “Power Broker” when Dancing Daddy Zemo (Daniel Brühl), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Smiling Tiger (Anthony Mackie) had to team up to get information from Madripoor. All three characters have previously been members of the Thunderbolts team in Marvel comics.

Created by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley, the Thunderbolts first appeared in 1997’s The Incredible Hulk #449 before being launched into their self-titled comic book later that year. Originally, the Thunderbolts were a superhero team that was made up of reformed supervillains known as the Masters of Evil after the Avengers were declared dead. Helmed by Baron Zemo, over the course of the team’s history most of the members found that they preferred to be heroes to villains.
Who Could Be in Thunderbolts?
Over the years, the team has gone through various iterations. Thus, several Marvel Cinematic Universe characters have the potential to pop up in the Thunderbolts film in addition to the ones previously mentioned Zemo, Winter Soldier, and Captain America. Other members of the Thunderbolts over the course of their history include Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Abomination (Tim Roth), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

While there are many potential nefarious characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the team is currently led by none other than Luke Cage (Mike Coulter), Mayor of New York City so while the Thunderbolts is traditionally a team of supervillains that sometimes includes a misguided Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), its new hustle is to protect the people of NYC.
