SDCC 2022 blessed us with one more fiery surprise — the Comic-Con extended trailer for HBO’s House of the Dragon! While the lucky attendees at the Hall H panel got an exclusive viewing of the Westerosi goodness on Saturday, said extended trailer found its way to Shark Week on Discovery on Sunday, July 24, 2022.
The epic trailer opens with Harrold Westerling (Graham McTavish) opening the door for young Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) to the throne room. King Viserys (Paddy Considine) narrates the proceedings, discussing a dream he once had. He claims he placed his heir on the Iron Throne, “and all the dragons roared as one.”
Next, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) broaches the subject of selecting Viserys’ heir. While Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is the king’s daughter, Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) brings up Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), Viserys’ brother.

We see another shot of Viserys explaining to Rhaenyra that the Iron Throne “is the most dangerous seat in the realm.” Of course, folks balk at the idea of a woman ruling Westeros. Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) informs her husband Corlys that Rhaenyra’s reign “will be challenged.” Hey, she should know — technically, she’s the genuine heir to the Iron Throne.
The House of the Dragon trailer shows shots of bloody battles and ethereal, stunning backdrops. Ser Laenor Velaryon (John MacMillan), Corlys and Rhaenys’ son, intones, “War is afoot,” and we observe what appears to be Daemon and Otto on opposing sides. Meanwhile, Rhaenys tells Rhaenyra that queens don’t get to sit on the Iron Throne because of the patriarchy.
Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) talks to Viserys about finding a wife. Rhaenyra and Alicent’s once-close bond turns deadly when the pair ignites a vicious rivalry. There are soaring dragons, dragon eggs, clanking swords and brooding stares galore.

Rhaenyra vows her rule will change the realm. Perhaps we’ll see her “break the wheel” as her relative Daenerys Targaryen promises to do centuries later.
Phew! If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be on pins and needles until next month. House of the Dragon will take HBO Max by storm on Sunday, August 21, 2022. Watch the trailer below, and share your theories in the comments!
