SDCC wouldn’t be the same without Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel returned to Hall H as James Gunn presented the first look at the third film. And yes, Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is back!

Marvel continues to elude the fans by presenting in-room trailer only. Gunn presented the trailer and the sad news that this is the last story for ‘his’ Guardians. “This is the end of that story. I’m sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn’t mean everybody dies.”

From a description of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer, Gamora is now a Ravager, perhaps the leader, and does not remember the other Guardians. That’s gotta hurt for StarLord (Chris Pratt). Should she remember them? Isn’t this Gamora from a different timeline that did not connect with the Guardians?

The film will delve into Rocket’s (Bradley Cooper) back story a bit. Gunn said Rocket is the saddest creature in the universe and his story will be the driving force of the third movie. There’s a shot of baby Rocket in the trailer. Awww … (An illegal video is circulating on Twitter if you need to see that.)

We finally get a good look at Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter. Groot (Vin Diesel) is now a young adult. They sure do grow up fast. And the trailer introduces Maria Balakova as Cosmo the Space Dog.

Chris Pratt, Karen Gillian, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Will Poulter, and Maria Balakova joined Gunn onstage to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn announced more additions to the cast including Chukwudi Iwuji, Daniela Melchior and Nico Santos. Iwuji actually showed up dressed as his character, High Evolutionary. Elizabeth Debicki also returns as the Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign.

Gillian teased a lighter side of Nebula. “She had a very cathartic experience with having Thanos eliminated from her life. So she’s finding her own personality.” Poulter expressed his gratitude, saying “It’s pretty surreal to have ever stepped on the Guardians set.”

The trailer made the cast cry because they know this is the final adventure. And they are all excited for the fans to see the final product. Sean Gunn is proud of the work he did with his brother. “The most rewarding part of it has been working with my brother…It’s come to a point where it’s not just about the joy of working with him, it’s about the joy of working with all these other people.”

Hopefully we get to see that trailer sooner that later. For now, that’s all for Guardians of the Galaxy at SDCC.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters on May 5, 2023.
