Yesterday during SDCC 2022, Crunchyroll and Toei Animation released a new trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. It’s packed to the brim with action and nostalgia for longtime fans of the franchise. During the panel, the voice actors for Piccolo, Toshio Furukawa and Christopher R. Sabat took to the stage with producer Norihiro Hayashida to chat about the film and share stories. Afterward, they gave fans in attendance an extended look at the first 20 minutes of the film. While those of us who weren’t there will have to wait, this trailer has enough to really hold us over.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero follows Son Goku (Masako Nozawa/Sean Schemmel) after he put an end to the Red Ribbon Army. However, some individuals still carry on its spirit and have created Androids Gamma 1 (Hiroshi Kamiya/Aleks Le) and Gamma 2 (Mamoru Miyano/Zeno Robinson). Now it’s time for Piccolo and Son Gohan (Nozawa/Kyle Hebert) to step up and protect Earth (again) from the evil Red Ribbon Army. While this is an original story, Dragon Ball‘s creator Akira Toriyama has worked with the team to make this film feel like a piece of the overall story. The characters, themes and action level will match what we have come to expect from the franchise.
The new trailer doesn’t go into much of the story but shows off the animation and action. This looks, feels and holds all the nostalgia we love from the Dragon Ball franchise. And getting to watch Son Gohan in action? It’s like a dream come true. Just watching him take his glasses off after going Super Sayian gives us all the feels. Plus, this trailer tells us that we are getting one of the best team-ups in Dragon Ball history – Piccolo and Son Gohan. We’ve seen them fight alongside each other time and time again, but it never ever gets old. Let’s hope that neither of them ends up visiting King Kai.

The Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero cast also includes Aya Hisakawa/Monica Rial as Bulma, Ryō Horikawa/Sabat as Vegeta, Mayumi Tanaka/Sonny Strait as Krillin, Yūko Minaguchi/Kara Edwards as Videl and Nozawa/Robert McCollum as Son Goten. We will also see Takeshi Kusao/Eric Vale as Trunks and Minaguchi/Jeannie Tirado as Pan. While this does seem to be missing some other key players, chances are we will see them in passing throughout the film. But, all the major players are accounted for.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will hit theaters on August 19, 2022. Tickets are available for purchase now through Fandango. It will also be availble in select IMAX theaters.
