SDCC 2022 has returned in a huge way this past weekend with news across all facets of geekdom. One return, and something I personally have been looking forward to, was Kevin Smith. He has been a staple at nearly every SDCC over the last few years, talking about some of his most exciting projects. And this year, he has something big up his sleeve – Clerks III. Earlier this weekend, Deadline associate editor Valerie Complex took some time to interview Smith at the Mooby’s pop-up and share some exciting first-look photos from the film.
Clerks III sees Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) return to their beloved (and sometimes highly frustrating) Quick Stop. The guys have gotten older, and with that comes some medical problems like a heart attack, which sends Randal to the hospital and leaves him questioning all his life choices. And in a moment of art imitating life, Randal decides he is going to make a movie. And what is this movie about? His life working at the Quick Stop. It seems Smith is ready to come full circle.

Along with Dante and Randal, we also see the return of familiar faces Jay (Jason Mewes), Silent Bob (Smith), Becky (Rosario Dawson) and Elias (Trevor Fehrman). The trailer also introduced Elias’ new friend Blockchain Coltrane (Austin Zajur) and both of their unique styles. From the trailer, it looks as if Smith is returning to his roots of funny comedy, little bouts of existential crisis and showcasing our little real-life issues onto the screen.
In Complex’s interview with Smith, he shared that he “never quite understood why people like Clerks so much. I didn’t think it would play outside of New Jersey because it’s a very regional, workplace comedy. But you don’t have to be from New Jersey to identify with having a job you hate. It’s a universal truth for most people. Being able to turn that experience into a trilogy was great.”

And as someone born, raised and still living in New Jersey, Clerks is my favorite movie. But not just because of where it was filmed, but because even 28 years later, the film’s central themes still stand true. It’s easy to find bits and pieces of yourself in Smith’s characters and understand precisely where they are coming from. It has been a joy to grow up alongside Smith’s journey as a director, and Clerks III has been a long time coming.
At the end of Complex’s interview, Deadline shared the exclusive SDCC images from Lionsgate. They show Randal, Dante and the others along with shots of the Quick Stop, some filming and Justin Long visiting Randal at the hospital. Whoever thought he would make a good doctor – well, they were probably right. We’ve dropped the images below for you to check out as well.
