Netflix Geeked was back for another SDCC 2021 panel today. This one focused on the upcoming action comedy film The Last Mercenary. It stars one of my favorite action and martial art actors of all time, Jean-Claude Van Damme. During the panel, we got a glimpse at the film’s opening sequence and a chat between Josh Horowitz, Van Damme, and director David Charhon. Que the summersaults, splits and a callback to a pretty epic moment between Horowitz and Van Damme.

The Last Mercenary follows Richard Brumère, better known as “The Mist,” a former French secret service special agent turned mercenary. He returns to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation. The opening clip gives us every we want in a Van Damme film. Action? Check! Martial arts? Check! Splits? Of course!

Van Damme went on to share how Netflix has created a space where viewers can enjoy content from different countries and cultures. Because of this, films like The Last Mercenary are able to be enjoyed in so many markets. And I have to agree. Thanks to Netflix, I have been able to enjoy films and TV series from multiple different countries I wouldn’t have thought to seek out. Major kudos to Netflix on this point!

The panel went on to discuss the direction of the film and what inspired Charhon. He shared how he wanted to explore the different facets of Van Damme’s acting. We know he is great at martial arts and action-style films. But Charhon also wanted to show the world just how funny Van Damme can be and the range of emotions he can bring to the table. I’m really excited to see just how much this man can make me laugh!

I highly suggest checking out the full panel for more fun tidbits about the upcoming film. The Last Mercenary will drop onto Netflix on July 30, 2021! Are you ready for butt-kicking comedic Van Damme? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
