Grab that whiskey and doughnuts, Earpers! Wynonna Earp swoops in to SDCC 2020 like a sexy gay phoenix rising from the ashes. Moderator Katie Wilson of Syfy Wire sat down with showrunner Emily Andras, as well as stars Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, Kat Barrell, and Varun Saranga.
Now, the panel opened with a five-minute recap of Seasons 1-3 complete with commentary from the cast. “What an awesome show!” Rozon exclaimed after the recap concluded. Wilson asked the panel how it felt to return after nearly two years of fighting for Wynonna Earp Season 4. “It’s incredible, but there is a sort of sense like, ‘How do we pay back the people who helped us keep this show going?'” Andras explained. The Earpers’ tireless efforts to bring back Wynonna Earp isn’t lost on the cast or Andras. In fact, they hope to do right by fans.
Amid the recap, the gang expressed how difficult it was to film Dolls’ (Shamier Anderson) exit. Scrofano recalled a memory of her and Anderson simply holding hands through it all. It was quite emotional for everyone involved.
Next, Wilson brought in fan questions for the panelists to answer. The group went around and proffered one-word responses regarding how it felt to be back on set. “Home.” “Family.” “Magic.” Those were just a few words thrown around that truly encapsulated the essence of our sh*tshow.
Then, a fan asked what items would be included in a Wynonna Earp time capsule. Saranga would love to throw in that photo with Dolls (RIP). Scrofano teased that she’d add Wynonna’s positive pregnancy test into the mix. Rozon mentioned Doc’s guns, as that seemed very “old-time-y.” As for Rozon himself, he would keep the “I’m all in” slip of paper that Doc gave Wynonna in Season 2. And cue the waterworks.
Scrofano would also put Peacemaker in said figurative time capsule. Barrell would choose something from Season 4, but apparently the answer was too rife with spoilers to mention. Consider my curiosity peaked! Andras would throw in Beau Smith‘s original graphic novel. In addition, she’d include a copy of an email from Syfy that gave her the go-ahead for the show.
Next, a fan posed this question: which senior superlatives would their characters fall under? Waverly would be “Most Likely to Succeed.” Doc would be “Most Likely to Become a Dentist.” Apparently, Scrofano and her real-life husband were voted “Cutest Couple” when they were in high school. Cue the waterworks…again. As for Wynonna herself, she’d fall under “Most Likely to Take No Sh*t.” Seems apropos. Nicole would be “Most Likely to Visit Every Country.”
Now, another fan asked how Wynonna Earp characters would fare in an escape room. It was unanimously agreed upon that Waverly would be the most eager to solve said escape room. Her and Jeremy would probably solve it in tandem. Doc might suffer from a bout of claustrophobia due to his time in the well. Andras revealed that a writer for the show was keen on developing a Wynonna Earp-themed escape room for a future convention. I’m game!
Another fan posed a query specifically for Andras regarding Nicole’s promotion from guest star to series regular. Initially, Barrell was contracted for a six-episode arc. However, WayHaught’s chemistry was electrifying and the rest is history. “We always had high hopes for Nicole as a character. It was more like a contract thing. It wasn’t so much that I had a six-episode arc for Nicole. I just didn’t have anything for her [at the time],” she explained.
Then, Wilson staged a fun trivia game for the cast to test their close friendship. How much do they really know about each other? First question was centered around Scrofano. How did her character perish in Saw 6? Andras provided a pretty left-of-center answer. However, her second guess was correct. Scrofano’s character died via metal carousel!
What was Rozon’s first concert? Scrofano correctly answered Whitesnake! Next, the gang had to guess the name of the musical Barrell directed while in high school. The answer? The Wizard of Oz, of course! Provost-Chalkley’s least favorite chore? Initially, Barrell guessed washing the dishes. However, the British actress said it was “taking out the bins.” Rozon joked that Provost-Chalkley despised “cleaning up after tea and biscuits.”
Saranga starred in which two student films while in high school? Nobody could answer this question, so Saranga provided the answers. One was a project called Nerd Man, while the other was called Small Fry. Lastly, what is Andras known for swiping from the set? Answer: bananas. For making banana bread, obviously.
Next, Wilson had the gang play a game called “The Wheel of Wynonna.” Scrofano had to do an impression of Champ describing the plot for Wynonna Earp Season 1, which she did with excellent accuracy. “What’s a plot? Uh babe, Waves, what’s a plot?” Give this woman an Emmy already. Rozon had to imitate Bobo Del Rey describing drink specials at Shorty’s. “Waverly, can you get me a WayHaught Toddy?” To which Scrofano chimed in that Rozon had a slew of Wynonna-inspired drink specials he would love to unleash on the world. It wouldn’t be SDCC 2020 without tidbits like this.
Then, everyone was instructed to say “Wynonna” with their best Doc Holliday impression. Cue a chorus of exaggerated southern drawls! Barrell donned a paper bag on her head to serve as Doc’s signature hat. However, as per usual, only Rozon could properly pull off that good ol’ boy accent. It must be the hat and the mustache.
Lastly, Wilson introduced a sneak peek of tomorrow night’s season premiere, aptly titled “On the Road Again.” After said sneak peek, Wilson asked Andras what the later time slot meant regarding the show’s content. “We can make it more sexy, more violent, and Nedley can drop more F-bombs,” she replied.
That’s a wrap on Wynonna Earp at SDCC 2020!
