The New Mutants set another release date

To say it’s been a roller coaster of a ride for The New Mutants film is an understatement. Regardless of all the chatter, the opening of the SDCC 2020 Comic-Con At Home panel made it clear. The movie is releasing in theaters! And there’s a new release date.

The opening sequence of the panel acknowledged the many cancelled release dates – April 13, 2018; February 22, 2019; August 2, 2019 and April 3, 2020. Next they showed a bunch of comments making fun of the film for constantly being pushed back. And then finally, they showed the new release date with a bubble that said “fingers crossed.”  Then the panel began.

The release date wink is interesting, because Disney just announced another shuffle of release dates for their films currently on hold, and Warner Bros. just announced that Tenet is on hold indefinitely. Let’s not forget the theaters. If they don’t open before The New Mutants’ release date, the film will be pushed back again.

The New Mutants panel was only 30 minutes long and featured stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga, as well as director Josh Boone. The panelists joked throughout the broadcast about the cursed film, but everyone was in high spirits and seemed excited for the fans to see it. The panel concluded by showing the opening scene of the movie.

After the titles, Hunt’s character, Danielle “Dani” Moonstar, narrates with an old, Native American proverb that each person has two bears inside of them. One is good, the other is evil and they are at war for the person’s soul.

Then the action starts as Dani wakes up because of an explosion. Her father, played by Adam Beach, gets her out of their home and tells her to run as fast as she can. They run out of the trailer, and Dani’s father tells her to hide inside a tree. He runs back to help others, but he dies. Dani runs and can hear something (the demon bear) following her. Dani falls and hits her head. She wakes up handcuffed to a gurney, and Rahne Sinclair (Williams) is staring at her from the ventilation shaft in the ceiling. Then we get another trailer. You can check out that intense scene at 24:33 time mark in the panel video below.
