The first look at Amazon Prime’s Utopia asks the question, “What if your favorite comic book was real?” That’s the premise of this new series, starring Rainn Wilson and John Cusack. The trailer and poster were revealed at Utopia’s SDCC Comic-Con At Home panel.

The series description reads, “A twisted, eight-episode thriller about a group of young comic fans who discover the conspiracy in a graphic novel is real, and embark on a high-stakes adventure to save humanity from the end of the world.”

Utopia also stars Sasha Lane, Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Desmin Borges, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Farrah Mackenzie, Christopher Denham, Cory Michael Smith and Jessica Rothe. Author and showrunner Gillian Flynn and members of the cast were on hand at the Comic-Con virtual panel to talk about the series.

According to THR, Flynn stated the project is seven years in the making and feels more resonant now. She was inspired by ’70s paranoia thrillers that came out in the wake of Watergate. Where “no one trusted anyone and there was a breakdown in what society, governments, and the world was feeling.” Definitely sounds familiar. Flynn calls the series “dark, chilling, resonant, frightening, charming, and occasionally touches your heart.” Cusack adds, “I can probably honestly say you’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The Utopia trailer looks exactly as Flynn described it. Utopia, the comic book, is a story of a rogue scientist who created biological warfare. The fans of the comic book discover the pandemic is real. Wilson’s character, a scientist, inserts himself right in the middle of it. Of course there are people who don’t want the public to know the pandemic is real, and that where things get tricky.
