Get ready for some Cloud 9 giggles! The cast of NBC’s Superstore paid a visit to SDCC 2020. Actress Lauren Ash served as moderator. Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney, Kaliko Kauahi, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, and Nichole Bloom joined as panelists.
Now, the panel opened with the Superstore cast preparing for SDCC 2020. Ash feigned to be waiting in line for Hall H, but when the camera pulled back she was the only one present. Feldman spoke to a horde of stuffed animals, pretending they were a group of journalists asking him questions. Bloom donned her Pikachu cosplay. Dunn bought some nachos, wore his nerd gear, and “threw $20 down the toilet.” Kauahi talked about the benefits of this year’s convention — no long lines and no exclusive parties to be barred from!
Apparently, Dunn was confused about the panel start time, but he joined the crew after a few moments of air time. Ash went around the group and asked everyone to describe how they felt via “color.” McKinney mentioned he was “mustard yellow.” Bloom categorized her emotional state as “sorbet.” Kauahi was “burnt sienna.”
Next, Ash had the crew reveal their favorite moments from filming Superstore. “I really enjoy all the times we’ve banded together against something,” Kauahi revealed. “Break room scenes and doing the all-nighter episode from Season 1,” Santos added. Bloom chimed in that she enjoyed working with the guest stars. In addition, a Season 4 episode wherein Amy and Cheyenne attend Cloud 9 Academy. Feldman just really enjoyed the variety of food from over the years. A man after my own heart. Now, Dunn really dug the annual Halloween episodes and seeing what costumes his cast mates would sport. Ben Stiller visiting the Superstore set was a highlight for McKinney.

Fun fact: both McKinney and Feldman have directed Superstore episodes. Second fun fact: McKinney is known for improvising songs on the fly. He then proceeded to put this talent on display by singing a song about the SDCC 2020 panel. Third fun fact: in addition to his song improvisation gift, Mckinney also improvises quite a bit of his dialogue. He fondly recalled the scene from the pilot episode wherein he bickered with Ash’s character. Said scene was improvised. Must be his street cred with The Kids in the Hall!
Then, Ash presented fan questions for the group. Our cast went around and talked about what music their characters would like. Kesha and Megan Thee Stallion would rule Cheyenne’s playlists, while Sandra would just have different iterations of “Creep” by Radiohead. The cast also discussed the other characters they’d like to play. Kauahi would like to portray Marcus. Dunn would love to take a crack at Brett. Bloom would like to play Carol, while Santos would love to be Sandra or Cheyenne. Feldman joked that he would be taking over the role of Amy for next season. You heard it here first, folks!

Next, the cast reminisced about shooting Season 5. Feldman recalled his last scene with America Ferrera. “It’s wild to think about where we were in terms of the show a year ago,” Ash said. Dunn explained how excited he was to resume filming, especially to give essential workers relatable content for them to enjoy.
EPs Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green joined the panel for the last 10 minutes. The pair discussed some discarded story ideas to the amusement of cast and fans alike. One potential ending to Season 1 included Jonah revealing that he was a corporate spy sent from Cloud 9 headquarters. Glenn’s favorite ice cream would be Dippin’ Dots. However, the only way he knew how to get it was to buy a ticket to Six Flags everyday and stand in line for the ice cream of the future. In addition, another canned idea was for Sandra to gradually go bald prior to her wedding. Folks, I can see why these ideas were discarded, but they’re hysterical all the same.
And that’s a wrap on Superstore for SDCC 2020!
