Fear the Walking Dead season five left fans with some lingering questions. However, Fear TWD season six began filming before the coronavirus shut down production. They were able to complete the first half of season six and the second half is written. The cast and producers were on hand in a San Diego Comic Con virtual panel to discuss that frustrating season five finale and what’s in store for season six.

In season five, Morgan (Lennie James) and the gang took Virginia’s (Colbie Minifie) offer and she split up the group. She split up John (Garret Dillahunt) and June (Jenna Elfman), moments after they were married. Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Victor (Colman Domingo) ended up in the same car, so that’s a plus. They took Daniel’s (Rubén Blades) cat from him! Rude! And even worse, Ginnie shot Morgan and left him for dead because he is a threat to her leadership.

Panel: Scott M. Gimple, Andrew Chambliss, Ian Goldberg, Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Rubén Blades, Danay Garcia, Jenna Elfman, Karen David

Moderator: Chris Hardwick

Hardwick divide the panel into two groups of cast members. The showrunners Goldberg and Chambliss along with Gimple stayed on for both groups. The first group consisted of James, Debnam-Carey, and Domingo

First and foremost, the question on everyone’s mind: is Morgan okay? Showrunners Goldberg and Chambliss could only answer that ‘Okay’ can mean a lot of things. I think it’s safe to assume that Morgan survives. The new trailer has Virginia hiring someone to find Morgan.

That being said, a fan asked James if he’d like to see Morgan find love. Of course he wants Morgan to find love. James said Grace opened up a part of his heart that he locked down. Now it’s opened up to possibilities.

A fan asked what Rick Grimes would think of Morgan’s situation in season six. James answered that he would be glad his friend is still alive, but really worried about what’s left of Morgan and where he ends up.

The subject of Virginia, played by Colbie Minifie came up. James enjoyed his scenes with Minifie. He says she makes a fantastic villain because she can be quite unnerving.

Gimple added that Virginia thinks of herself as a hero. She is the cheeriest of all of the TWD villains, but she can turn that cheer off on a dime. He teases that we will see many different sides to Virginia. One of those sides comes out only for her younger sister Dakota, played by Zoe Colletti. Dakota is one of the many new characters in season six.

Hardwick asked what Strand’s deal with Virginia meant for Domingo. He gave her the starter to the SWAT van in the Fear TWD season five finale. Domingo said “Strand is gonna Strand.” That deal shows who he is. He knew it was time to go deep into his skill set as a survivor. The part of Strand that is a survivor, the person we saw in the beginning, is going to come back.

Hardwick asked Debnam-Carey who Alicia trusts the most. She said no one is really trusting anyone, but it would have to be Strand. Also, Debnam-Carey would like to see Alicia find a renewed hope and be grounded. Hardwick joked that when a character is grounded, that’s when they are killed. Yikes!

Gimple teased the possibility of seeing Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon) again. He said there’s more story to tell. They want to explore both characters individually and potentially together. Typical Gimple…he never gives a straight answer. Gimple also confirmed there will be time “jumps” in season six.

The showrunners said that we will see an anthology style structure to this next season. Kind of like they did with Al an Isabelle and John and June. Gimple said it’s like 16 little movies.

Domingo and James are directing episodes in season 6. Colman described his episode as very “Die-Hard-esk.” This is James’ directorial debut and he had the pleasure of directing Domingo and Debnam-Carey. Domingo sent several texts of do’s and don’ts to James before he began his episode. The overall consensus is that James did an amazing job.

When asked to give two words to the describe the season, Domingo said opportunistic and daring. James said it’s a look at the other side of everybody. And Debnam-Carey said deceptive and different.

Fear the Walking Dead cast at SDCC 2020

Danay Garcia, Ruben Blades, Karen David and Jenna Elfman on the Fear The Walking Dead Comic-Con At Home panel

Elfman, Blades, Garcia, and David join the panel.

Garcia says Luciana has a plan, but she’s not telling anyone. She says it’s an unpredictable decision, but it’s the right way to continue with a bigger plan.  One thing is for sure, Virginia is not going to kill Luciana because she needs her to make the gasoline.

If Blades and David were going to start a band with Charlie ( Alexa Nisenson), their name would be The Living Dead. Blades is also missing the daily contact with the cast and crew the most.

Grace’s pregnancy was a huge shock for David, as well as others. David says Grace accepted her death and now she is questions if she can hope again. When asked what she would name the baby, David said she would want to honor Morgan. So if it’s a boy, Duane after Morgan’s son. And if its a girl, whatever Morgan’s wife name was. Her name was Jenny.

Elfman says June is strong, observant, and smart. She will put all of her abilities to work where necessary. She’s able to handle what comes at her. As for John, June is confident that John can take care of himself. June is just focusing on her purpose, helping people, to keep her sane.

A fan asked if we will see Dwight (Austin Amelio) and Sherri (Christine Evangelista) reunited. A released photo of Dwight and Sherri indicates they will, but…we’ve watched Dwight grow since his time on The Walking Dead. Goldberg said if that reunion were to happen, they are both very different people than they were at the Sanctuary.

That’s a wrap for Fear the Walking Dead Comic-Con 2020. You can watch the panel on YouTube.
