Supergirl dealt with a lot of divisive issues last season. The lasting effect will roll into season five for Kara (Melissa Benoist) because Lena (Katie McGrath) knows the truth about Supergirl. And she’s not happy about it. Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) is returning to National City as James Olsen (Mechad Brooks) will be leaving.
The cast and producers hit the stage in Ballroom 20 to talk about what’s to come in season five of Supergirl. They brought a teaser trailer and new poster featuring the new Supergirl suit! You can check out the trailer and new poster below.
The panel included Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Jessica Queller
The Supergirl trailer was up first with Kara’s voice over that technology is taking over the world. Lena takes over, saying she invests in technology, not people. Lena and Kara clearly don’t see eye to eye on this issue. You could say it’s a real punch to the face but they have a bigger issue to focus on. Leviathan.
Jon Cryer is moderating the panel and confirmed that Lex Luthor will return for Crisis on Infinite Earths. Yay! However, Leviathan will be the season villain.

The panel kicked into high gear by talking about Supergirl‘s new suit. The audience clearly like the pants better than the skirt.
Then they addressed Mechad Brooks’ exit from the series. It’s clearly an emotional day in the Arrowverse as Brooks couldn’t keep the tears back. He got a big group hug from the cast.

Maines is also grateful to Supergirl for taking an chance on her character Nia Nall/Dreamer. “This is my first trans superhero!” She said she’s been practicing her Dreamer puns when catching bad guys.
Benoist and Harewood are directing episodes this season. Benoist said she is excited to bring her imagination to life. Harewood will be directing episode eleven of the season so watch out for that!

Leigh said Alex’s adoption storyline will be explored more this season. They want to handle it delicately. Leigh said it’s an important part of Alex’s growth but it’s just as important that she’s found someone with the same goals.
For Kelly, Tesfai said it’s not a liner experience. To have someone experience that disappointment and still have that hope was a really big thing, because many women go through it.
McGrath talked about the scene when Lena kills Lex, saying it was very difficult and she won’t watch it. But she hears she was very good in it. Cryer joked that he will sneak into her home and show it to her. McGrath called him weird.
Benoist hopes they don’t make Lena evil after the betrayal. McGrath added that she loves that Lena is humanly flawed, asking herself if this betrayal will define who she is and her relationship with Kara.
Supergirl Casting News Alert! Julie Gonzalo will play superhero Acrata aka Andrea Rojas. Andrea will be taking over for James Olsen at CatCo. Staz Nair will play William Dey, a reporter with ties to the criminal underworld. He and Kara may be butting heads a bit. Rath says his sister will join the cast playing a female Brainiac, but there’s no confirmation of that.
That’s all from the Supergirl SDCC panel! Stick with Geek Girl Authority on the latest Arrowverse news.
Supergirl returns to The CW on Sunday, October 6.
