Fans have been going through an emotional rollercoaster this week with Supergirl news. First, we learned that Kara is getting a new, practical suit (it’s pants, everyone!). Then we learned that former series regular Jeremy Jordan is returning to the show. Now we’ve learned, thanks to EW, that Mehcad Brooks is leaving the superhero series after the fifth season. Say it ain’t so!

According to the report, Brooks is leaving after the first half of the season in order to focus on other projects. He wants to star in films, develop and star in a new series and if that wasn’t enough, he’s even working on a book. Showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller released a statement expressing their sadness at Brooks departure. “We love Mehcad and we’re sad to see him leave the show as a series regular, but we’re excited for both Mehcad and James Olsen’s future,” they said. “He’ll always be a part of our Supergirl family and we look forward to James returning to National City at some point to visit his sister and his super friends.”

It’s unclear how he’ll be departing the series or for how long. What is clear is the fans love of the character. He’s been with the series since the debut and has had multiple interesting arcs over the series. It’s a big loss for the show. However, never say never as he may return in the future. Hopefully we’ll learn more about it on the Supergirl SDCC panel.
