It: Chapter 2 director Andy Muschietti joined stars Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Isaiah Mustafa at New Line’s ScareDiego stage. Conan O’Brien moderated. Here are the highlights of that Q&A.
Muschietti admitted to casting the sequel in his head while filing the first movie, It. “I was very lucky that I got everyone I wanted to play in the movie. Half the cast was pre-thought about it. And the rest auditioned.”
Some of the child actors sent personalize letters to their adult counterparts, as kind of a “letter to my future self.” The letter also included a picture of the young actor. “I think we all had the same thought at the same time: ‘there’s no way I’m going to put up a picture of a young boy,’ ” Hader said to laughs.
It: Chapter Two used over 4,500 gallons of fake blood for this film. Chastain said she would step into a kiddy pool to pour cold blood on herself. The fake blood had to be kept at a low temperature to keep from curdling.
McAvoy commented on the intensity of filming, telling a story of having shoot a scene where he falls to his knees. They did so many takes, he had tendinitis for six months after filming.
The audience saw three scenes of the film. First, the Losers Club reunion at a Chinese restaurant, another scene when they confront Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) and one of Bill walking through a fun house to save a child. McAvoy says they changed the fun house scene after an hour of talking with Muschietti over tequila. McAvoy felt Bill needed to address his survivor’s guilt so they added him in.
