SDCC 2019: He’s Not the Alfred You Know at PENNYWORTH Panel

Erin Lynch

Pennyworth is having a bang-up time at this year’s comic con. For one, they previewed the premiere to fans exclusively at the convention on Wednesday night. They’ve also had an installment on site for fans to have fun in. Now they’ve been able to talk about the series in their SDCC panel. The panelists included Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Paloma Faith with executive producers Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller

Here’s What We Learned About the Series:

  • Every episode of Pennyworth is stand alone, but the first season is a complete story
  • Cannon revealed the series is essentially prequel to the Fox series Gotham.
  • We will meet Martha Wayne very early on in and she’s a main character in the series
  • “Bizarre. Dark. Sexy. Weird.” – how Jack Bannon described the series
  • Paloma Faith is stoked to be playing a female villain who isn’t defined by her sexuality – can I get an amen?!
  • Both Thomas Wayne and Alfred fall in love with Martha

Fun Quotes:

“I related to the notion of wanting to be better and go out and achieve things… that ambition and optimism and drive he has is very appealing to me” – Jack Bannon

“I had to go out and buy a suit, because I didn’t have a suit… I had to get a haircut. I had to get a tie…” – Jack Bannon

“What’s really important as an actress is that life — our villains in life — are black and white. Nobody is just horrible for horrible’s sake” – Paloma Faith

“My favorite bit of all of it was the violence. I’ve been suppressing it for my entire life” – Paloma Faith

“If you think you know Alfred, you don’t” – Danny Cannon

Check out the new teaser below:

And just for a bit of fun: IGN had the cast react to Alfred in the 1960s Batman series.

Pennyworth debuts on EPIX on July 28th.
