We’ve known for a few days that Benioff and Weiss were opting out of the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Game of Thrones, reportedly due to “scheduling conflicts.” Popular opinion is that their absence had more to do with the backlash they’ve received for the show’s final season. With this in mind, it wasn’t entirely surprising that the panel kicked off with a PSA from moderator James Hibberd for the audience, essentially, to be nice– or that the subject of backlash and bullying arose more than once.
In any event, it was mostly jokes and reminiscences from Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Conleth Hill (Varys), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark).

What we learned:
- Liam Cunningham wants his spin-off to be called “Better Call Davos”
- Maisie Williams believes Arya’s “West of Westeros” travels are something like Dora the Explorer, but without the haircut.
- Jacob Anderson thinks Grey Worm is on a beach in Naath, sipping piña coladas and “protecting people,” keeping his promise to Missandei– and/or starting a new society, like Wakanda.
- Nikolaj thinks Brienne would have dumped Jaime within weeks if he’d lived.
- Conleth Hill confirmed that Varys WAS trying to poison Daenerys!
- Maisie doesn’t think Arya going back to Gendry would be right for her or fulfilling.
- Maisie also doesn’t think Jon helped kill the Night King – she did it on her own! (And she’s right.)
- The souvenir Isaac Hempstead Wright stole from set at the end? A wooden spoon.
Quotable Quotes:
“Westeros is now a surveillance state, with Bran seeing and knowing everything.” – Isaac Hempstead Wright
“I don’t regret starting the petition” – Conleth Hill
“What’s west of Westeros? No one thought to ask Bran.” – Maisie Williams
“I’m only going to say this once: Dick. No balls.” – Jacob Anderson

At the #GameOfThrones #SDCC panel with one third of the cast, neither of the showrunners, and a Hall H full of fans. This is going to get wild.

It really says something about the current state of the worst parts of fandom that the #GameofThrones panel at #SDCC kicked off with a polite, coded warning to the audience to not be crappy to the cast and to be respectful.

I love Maisie but her talking about how Arya’s always been a lone wolf shows what a fundamental disservice the show did to the Arya Stark of the books, who is arguably the most pack-oriented character in the series. #SDCC #gameofthrones
