When The Orville premiered last year, there were many people who worried about the success of Seth MacFarlane’s spacefaring dramedy/adventure series. Unfortunately, if one was to look at the Rotten Tomatoes and the Metacritic scores of the series, one would probably be surprised that it was renewed for a second season.
But there is something to be said about this Saturn Award-winning series. Many considered it to be a Star Trek rip-off, but in truth, The Orville is its own series. While it may pay homage to Star Trek, Seth MacFarlane and the gang make sure that we know that it is anything but. With MacFarlane’s signature comedic stylings (whether you love him or not) to the outstanding acting from the entire cast, The Orville has taken us on emotional and epic journeys while addressing some divisive social issues (overuse of social media, gender identity), and they do it with heart and a little dose of campiness.

At San Diego Comic Con 2018, we got our first Season 2 trailer and it looks like we’re going to be seeing a lot more action, with new worlds, new species, new dilemmas, and Bortus being Bortus.
Season 2 will also see some new characters coming on as series regulars. It was reported months ago that Jessica Szohr would be in Season 2 as a series regular, Chris Johnson would be on the show as a recurring character and Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager) would also make an appearance. And of course, in bigger news, Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is slated to direct an episode as well.
The Orville Season 2 will premiere on December 20, 2018 on Fox. Here’s your first look at Season 2 below.
