The Gifted

The Gifted is heading into its second season on FOX.  The Marvel hit was off to a great start with a action packed first season.  Season one focused on the Strucker family trying to find a safe space with the Mutant Underground. Running from Sentinel Services gave the mutants a common enemy, but a divided defensive strategy. The Mutant Underground wanted to hide, while some mutants wanted to fight back.  Season two is expected to bring more action with addition of the Hellfire Club and possibly some answers to what happened to the X-Men.

The Panel: Stephen Moyer, Natalie Alyn Lind, Blair Redford, Sean Teal, Emma Dumont, Jamie Chung, Skyler Samuels, Matt Nix and Jeph Loeb

The panel started with the season 2 trailer. Lots of focus on Lorna/Polaris.  Her power seems to be erratic with every kick of the baby.  There is an organization that runs Hellfire Club known as the Inner Circle.  Lorna, Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes-White), and a handful of other mutants joined the radical group last season.  There seems to be a lot of turmoil between the Mutant Underground and the Inner Circle.  And don’t forget the Sentinal Services. Looks like they are more determined to find all of the mutants.  And the Inner Circle is preparing for battle. That’s if Polaris’ power doesn’t destroy everything first.

Nix and Loeb stated that season two will be set in a new location, a time jump and focus on the discrimination of others a little more.  From the trailer we can see that the new location appears to Washington D.C.  The time jump is six months, long enough for Polaris to reach full term. And the discrimination, well, we’ve seen that before.

Loeb said the best Marvel stories are ones you take from the real world and put it through a Marvel prism.  He boils it down to one word: tolerance.

So what’s in store for the characters:

Samuels: The Cuckoo sisters are at odd with each other at times.

Redford: John/Thunderbird feels like a failure, but he’s hot and heavy with Blink (Chung).

Chung: Blink’s relationship with John is the only stable thing in her life. The Mutant Underground are still saving mutants, but Blink finds a place among the Morlocks.  She’s fascinated by them.

Dumont: Polaris is very pregnant and missing Marcos (Teale). She’s very scared about the birth because she controls metal and she doesn’t want to die. Last season Polaris hated her father [Magneto}, but she’s beginning to see that maybe he wasn’t so bad. She’s becoming a parent and understands the sacrifices you have to make when given this gift.

Lind: This season we have the Morlock, the Purifiers, the Hellfire Club, and us.

Teale: Eclipse becomes very volatile. He has the power within him to find light in darkness and vice versa. He has to step up and be a leader, but he becomes more erratic the closer the birth comes.

Moyer: Reed’s abilities have been manifesting over the last six months. He’s been hiding it from his family and the Mutant Underground. Moyer talked to Nix about how they would reveal this ability, so the fans will have to wait and see.

Will there be any past X-men mutants this season?  Nix says there will be some mutants from the past.  Nix suggests the fans read the comics. He says they won’t necessarily be from the movies, but there are some exciting mutants coming from the comics.

The only casting news. is the addition Grace Byers (Empire) as Reeva Payge.   I expect to hear more in the coming weeks.

The Gifted season two premieres Tuesday, September 25 on Fox.
