SDCC 2018: SUPERGIRL Casts Nicole Maines as First Transgender Superhero

Erin Lynch

Supergirl continues to be amazing. Announced today at SDCC, they revealed the news that they’ve cast the first ever transgender superhero. Incredible! World, meet Nicole Maines – the first live-action transgender superhero.

Who is Maines playing? Well, it was said that she’ll be playing Nia Nal aka Dreamer. While there’s only one Dreamer in the DC Universe – her name is left unknown. However, this sounds very close to Nura Nal aka Dream Girl. Nal was a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the 30th and 31st century. She was from the planet Naltor and first appeared in Adventure Comics #317. While it’s unclear if Maines will be playing anything remotely similar to the character, I can’t help but think the role will be based off the character. She will be joining the CatCo team as a reporter. She’s also quoted to have a “fierce drive to protect others”.

Maines is a transgender activist who has starred in roles on Royal Pains and The Trans List. She was overly excited to share the news, proclaiming “AAAH YES IT FEELS SO GOOD TO HAVE THE CAT GRANT OUT OF THE BAG!!”. She’ll be a season regular for the fourth season of Supergirl. I’m really glad to hear Maines as joined the cast as she will be a wonderful addition to the team. Welcome, Nicole!

I don’t think it can be stressed enough just how amazing this is. Nicole and Supergirl are making history and I’m so glad it’s on a female led show. Diversity is absolutely key! Well done and bravo!

What do you think of the casting news? Are you as excited as we are? Let us know! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority where we raise all women up. Supergirl returns Sunday, October 14th, 2018.
