A television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 1980 sci-fi thriller novel, Nightflyers, is coming to Netflix. And, it’s at San Diego Comic-Con with a panel that introduced the cast, the first few minutes of episode one, and the first trailer for the series.

The series is set 75 years into our future, when a ship full of human scientists make first contact with an alien race. That ship is the Nightflyer. And, something goes horribly wrong. In fact, according to panel attendees, something goes horribly wrong in the first few minutes of the first episode, as they were shown that footage at SDCC, Thursday.

George R.R. Martin is under exclusive contract with HBO, and is not directly involved in this series, save an executive producer credit. But, the show is definitely embracing the spirit of his work.

The actors don’t even get the benefit of knowing their fate!

The trailer is haunting, terrifying, beautiful and intriguing. A lot of people are making the comparison to Event Horizon. It seems apt, given the horrific presence on the ship and the general theme of first contact. Nightflyers, however, has the advantage of a several episode arc that could give it an edge in the storytelling department. The trailer sure makes it look that way. This looks good.

Nightflyers stars Jodie Turner-Smith, Gretchen Mol, Eoin Macken, Sam Strike, Angus Sampson and David Ajala, among others. The 10-episode series airs this fall on Syfy.
