SDCC got bit by the musical bug Thursday night as Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna took the stage with an exclusive panel. Cast member Michael McMillian, who portrays Rebecca Bunch’s co-worker Tim, moderated the festivities. Of course, Bloom and McKenna tantalized comic-con goers with details of the upcoming fourth and final season. How will Rebecca’s story end? Will she find peace with herself, and everlasting love with Nathaniel? Given the massive cliffhanger from the previous season, Rebecca’s got a long way to climb before she’s truly out of the abyss. A hearty thanks to IndieWire for the musical scoop – you can read their detailed breakdown of the panel here.

Now, McMillian, who dubbed the panel “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: The Final Curtain Call,” started off by introducing the Season 3 gag reel. Everyone loves to watch actors crack up – it humanizes them. Next, Brosh McKenna reminded the audience that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was initially planned as a four season series. Thus, news of the show ending next year shouldn’t come as a surprise. “The very end, the last scene, has remained the same. Generally, directionally we knew what every chapter of the four was going to be,” she explained.

What can we expect in the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? Well, we can expect Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) to continue grappling with her diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). If you’ll recall, Rebecca was diagnosed with BPD last season after surviving a suicide attempt. “I think her challenge now is putting together the pieces…the lessons that she’s learned and putting it into practice. How do I marry the internal and the external? The show is about inner happiness,” Bloom said. There you have it – Rebecca’s journey really is about achieving that inner harmony and learning to love herself.

Also, we can expect the return of Castleman, portrayed by none other than Patton Oswalt. McKenna also promised a song from Oswalt, which is definitely something I’m looking forward to. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a musical, after all.

Of course, with Rebecca being in jail, a “Cell Block Tango”-esque number should be in our future, right? “Oh, you have no idea. A lot of people have requested ‘Cell Block Tango.’ This is the one time we kind of took [the request] into account. This is relevant in a way that we are excited for you to see,” Bloom revealed.

Next, Bloom delved into the mechanics behind the new theme song for Season 4. She half-spoke and half-sang the new number. Each season has a different theme song, one that encapsulates the tone of its respective season. We’ve got a clip from Twitter below. Take a gander, friends!

Now, despite Crazy Ex-Girlfriend approaching the final act, our creators promised that Season 4 will be chock full of story, efficiently tying up the tale of Rebecca Bunch. While the series will bow out from the CW, McKenna and Bloom are considering a stage version of the show. Of course, the live show featuring cast members of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will continue its tour. Fear not, friends. There’s more story to tell, and Season 4 is shaping up to be the best yet. Here’s hoping the show finally gains the accolades it so deserves. Not just for the artful storytelling and expertly handling Rebecca’s BPD, but Bloom herself winning something for her performance. She introduced musicals to mainstream TV, making them “cool” for the masses. I always thought musicals were cool.
