Fear the Walking Dead season four has gone through some major changes after new showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg took over. First there was the big crossover character, a big time jump that aligns FTWD with sister show The Walking Dead, and then two major deaths in the first eight episodes of season four that put fans in a frenzy.
Ratings have risen with the addition of the crossover character and fans have been receptive of three new cast members. After the big shake up, where does the group go from here?
The panel consisted of Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Lennie James, Maggie Grace, Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman, Danay Garcia, Chambliss, Goldberg, Scott M. Gimple, Gale Anne Hurd, Robert Kirkman, Greg Nicotero and Dave Alpert

The panel began with a blooper reel from the first half of season four before Yvette Nicole Brown took the stage. Brown was given a warm welcome as she introduced the trailer.

The trailer is intense. At first you think Alicia (Debnam-Carey), Strand (Domingo), Luciana (Garcia), Morgan (James), John (Dillahunt), Naomi/Laura/June (Elfman), Al (Grace), and Charlie (Alexa Nisenson) are trying to live a quiet life. That’s when the storm hits.
The biggest news of the panel is the new faces seen in the trailer. Aaron Stanford (12 Monkeys), Stephen Henderson (Lady Bird), Tonya Pinkins (Gotham), Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (NCIS: New Orleans), and Mo Collins (Parks and Recreation) join the cast for the second half of season four. Chambliss said the new characters will arrive with the storm, but did not go into detail the type of relationships they will have with the established characters.
The cast had some fun onstage, making fun of Dillahunt’s shirt, telling stories about shooting in Texas, and singing happy birthday to Debnam-Carey. I think they do this every year.
The major points of the panel include talking about crossing over Morgan Jones from The Walking Dead to FTWD. James said he felt a little weird not knowing what was going on in season 9 of TWD. When asked if there would be more crossover characters, Gimple danced around the question saying it’s possible.

Fun Fact: Domingo directed an episode of FTWD this season. He explained that the episode is all about Morgan, Al, and Naomi/Laura/June. James praised Domingo directing skills saying AMC has to let him do more. There will also be an Alicia-centric episode, that really gets inside her head. She has to decide how to keep going after the loss of her mother and brother.
There is also room to explore Al and John’s back stories, at least Dillahunt is hoping for more about his character’s past. And Althea, well, she’s still very much a mystery. Grace explains that Althea has been through a lot that makes her question whether or not she can love again.

And what about that love story! Naomi/Laura/June…sorry, I don’t know what to call her…and John Dorrie. Brown made sure to tell Dillahunt and Elfman that their love story was adorable! Elfman attributed the chemistry on screen how well they work together. She went on to say she truly feels safe with this cast and crew.
A fan asked the panel how they thought the zombie apocalypse started. Hurd answered that it started with the Breaking Bad meth. Ha! Some fan theories never get old.
As for Strand, the cast joked about a moment in the trailer where Strand is drinking wine in a mansion. Domingo explains that Strand always feels he should be living in “an elevated state.”

The cast of Fear the Walking Dead has been all over SDCC and San Diego. Dillahunt posted an Instagram live video early Friday morning with the cast as they went for a swim in the Pacific Ocean. Now that’s a family!
We should be hearing more about those new characters in the coming weeks. Geek Girl Authority has got you covered on everything Fear the Walking Dead. FTWD returns to AMC on August 12 immediately followed by Talking Dead with Brown as the host.
