Star Trek: Discovery has a big presence at SDCC this year. They put costumes and art on display, sponsored petty cabs and sent fans on a scavenger hunt. (If you’re at SDCC, you can still participate in #trekdiscovery. See info HERE). Here are 5 things we learned from their Saturday afternoon panel.
Rainn Wilson moderated the panel. He’ll be playing Harry Mudd in the series, and walked on stage to the Original Series theme song to thunderous applause.
The panel included Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Jason Isaacs (Captain Lorca), Doug Jones (Lieutenant Saru), Shazad Latif (Lieutenant Tyler), Mary Wiseman (Cadet Tilly), Anthony Rapp (Lieutenant Stamets), and James Frain (Sarek). Executive producers in attendance will be Alex Kurtzman (producer: Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Into Darkness), Gretchen J. Berg (producer: Pushing Daisies), Heather Kadin (producer: Scorpion), Aaron Harberts (producer: Pushing Daisies), and Akiva Goldsman (producer: The Dark Tower, Fringe).

- Klingons will speak Klingon and be subtitled. So, as Gretchen Berg said, ‘if you speak Klingon you’ll understand them’. They will not be portrayed as the thugs of the universe and their culture will be expanded.
- Jeff Russo will compose the music. He’s well known for his recent work on Fargo. This is great news, and might mean that the sound of this show could be a new and different experience for fans. He’s already completed the theme.
- Wilson Cruz will play Anthony Rapp’s love interest in the show. LGBTQ fans have been waiting for this!
- According to Jason Isaacs, Captain Lorca will be more f**ked up than other captains. Interesting. Because, let’s face it… Kirk is unstable.
- Doug Jones as Saru will be 6’8″ and have hooves for feet in the show. He gave the crowd a little sample of the movement he’s using for the character.

The cast and producers were very promising to fans to honor the legacy and do something new all at once. Actor Anthony Rapp said “I promise you that we passionately believe in what we are doing. We want to do something meaningful & honor what came before.” Producer Akiva Goldsman also delighted fans of the series by emphasizing the importance of diversity and compassion on the show. “Our opportunity is to take our view of conflict today and still search for some resolution that is not dystopian, but utopian.”
And to top it all off, they aired the brand new trailer for Discovery. It’s a beautiful trailer and one that should get fans hyped for the new season ahead. Check it out below!
