Fear the Walking Dead

Fear the Walking Dead just finished the first eight episodes of season three.  The cast arrived at SDCC to present what ahead for the Clarks.

The panel started with a moment of silence for stuntman John Bernecker.

Executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Ann Hurd, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, and Dave Erickson enter the stage first to talk about season three.

Erickson explained that the Native American storyline is about appropriation and taking things back.  It’s something that we haven’t see before.

Hurd says it was a sobering moment for Strand to find out there is nowhere to go where life is normal.

Kirkman teased a possible crossover with The Walking Dead.  He says they would love to try it. The fans would love it.  It’s difficult because the timelines are off.

Nicotero gave a shout out to George Romero. Romero gave Nicotero his first job.  Nicotero says he planned on being a doctor until he discovered Romero’s work.

The panel presents the Fear The Walking Dead trailer for the second half of season 3.

The residents of the Black Hat Reservation move onto the Broke Jaw Ranch.  Jake says they will share their resources.  Troy does not like the new arrangement.

The ranch is running out of water. That causes a lot of tension.

Madison prepares Alicia to defend herself.  Troy is also preparing  to fight.

Madison goes to the Tijuana Dam and finds Daniel.  She pleads for help for the ranch. She is also reunited with Strand.

The ranch is over run by the infected.  Everyone is in danger. Lots of guns shooting…lots of infected…lots of tense situations.

Kim Dickens, Colman Domingo, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Cary, Sam Underwood, Daniel Sharman, Dayton Callie, Mercedes Mason, and Michael Greyeyes join Erikson onstage.

Dickens about the changes in Madison, she is doing whatever is necessary to keep her family safe.  We found out Madison has a violent background and knows how to survive alone.  It’s keeping everyone safe that is proving to be a challenge.

Domingo talks about Strand’s vulnerability.  He says he’s ready to rebuild again.  Strand is grounded in a different way when the second half starts.  Things have a different meaning for him. And the only person he trusts is Madison, because she knows how to make the hard choices.

Dillane doesn’t really know what Nick thinks, ha! He says it was strange fighting the Native Americans. Dillane is British and didn’t understand the context of the conflict.

Erickson says Dillane plays Nick beautifully.  Nick ends up in a challenging position.  He’s getting closer to things that are more violent…including Madison.

It was pointed out that there are British actors on the cast.  Dillane, Underwood and Sharman. And jokes that the British are taking American jobs.  Sharman jokes that Americans cannot pull off a British accent.

Debnam-Carey talks about how Alicia has had to learn to be independent because of Nick’s troubles.  Alicia starts to question Madison’s actions when Otto dies.

When asked about the relationship between Alicia and Jake, Debnam-Carey says Jake was a distraction for Alicia.  She was trying to be normal and trying to fill the gaps that she was missing out on.  It’s a good thing for Alicia, because she’s not co-dependent on Jake. She doesn’t let that relationship define who she is.

Underwood points out one great thing about the show is the strength of the women.  They don’t need men to survive. Jake is trying to encourage Alicia to be a leader and embracing her strength.

Underwood explained Jake as a moral compass on the show.  He believes there is still good in people.  Jake is educated and uses his education to maintain the civility of the ranch.  He represents the faith that things can get better.

Troy on the other hand…Sharman says the writers make Troy very human and his actions are based on an understanding that he has of his upbringing. He’s not necessarily a hot head, he just reacts to situations differently because he’s always in survival mode.

The relationship between Troy and Madison is…weird.  Troy is aware that he is being played by Madison.  He enjoys playing this game with Madison. That’s why he likes Madison.  He enjoys making her think she has the upper hand.

Dayton Callie’s character Jeremiah Otto died in the midseason finale.  He says he will miss being a loving, caring, and understanding father.

Mason talks about the absence of Ofelia for the entire season.  Ofelia resurfaced in part one of the midseason finale.  Mason says Ofelia transformed from daddy’s little girl to a bit of a bad a**. She is a her father’s daughter.  Mason cannot wait for Ofelia to reunite with Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) to show him how she has survived.  Blade sent a video message to say hi to the fans.

The audience loved the Walker character and doesn’t see him as a villain.  Greyeyes says he loved playing Walker.  He liked that Walker is so smart.  He was delighted to play a character that was vigorous, a leader, intelligent, articulate, brutal and strategic.

Greyeyes states that in two episodes, Walker has turned the entire ranch inside out.  And he ends up co-opting Madison into his plans.  His mouth fell open when he read the script for the mid season finale.

The audience asks some questions.  Dickens says Madison’s weakness is her compassion. The audience sings Happy Birthday to Debnam-Carey.  And the cast has had zombie nightmares.

Fear the Walking Dead season three returns to AMC with a two-hour premiere on September 10.
