As if yesterday’s first-look images for Scream 6 weren’t enough to get your adrenaline running, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group have a brand new trailer. And it is the definition of chilling. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct the sixth installment within the iconic horror franchise from a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Scream 6 begins nearly a year after the events of 2022’s Scream and follows the four survivors of the Woodsboro murders. They have left the terrifying little town searching for a fresh chapter in NYC. But if the trailer indicates how their time is going, it isn’t good. It opens as Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) rush into a convenience store, looking for help. It seems this Ghostface isn’t terrified of other people seeing as he takes out the clerk and another customer before stalking Sam and Tara.

The Scream 6 trailer shifts to Sam talking about her history with the man in the mask, which references her father being Billy Loomis. It’s like this darkness is stalking her, having followed her from Woodsboro to NYC. But she isn’t alone. Gale (Courteney Cox) and Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) are here to help in their own way. But this Ghostface is different (we know we’ve heard that before), but the shrine we see in the trailer gives us the idea that this one might be slightly deranged. The second half of the trailer is a montage of Ghostface doing what he does best and our survivors looking terrified and fighting for their lives.

With each rewatch, it’s the shrine that we keep coming back to. This time, the killer behind the mask is someone who has been paying attention. Someone who has been invested in the history of Ghostface and obsessed with the survivors. This could be a callback to the first film, and we are beyond excited. And overall, the trailer for Scream 6 proves that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were the right choices for the job. It’s darker, more gruesome and downright gritty. It takes the iconic franchise and turns up the dial on the terror.

Barerra, Ortega, Cox and Panettiere return to Scream 6 alongside Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding. They are joined by newcomers Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving.

Scream 6 stalks into theaters on March 10, 2023. Check out the brand-new trailer below. Who do you think is behind the mask? Let us know in the comments below and on social media!
